Anybody know why some R Classes have the 4 Matic badge on the back while some don't? I haven't seen any pattern around model year or if 350 or 500.

Very early in the 2006 model year did not have the 4Matic badging. An example is the Saks Edition which were the first off the assembly line.

2008 model year is the only year that the R class was offered as a rwd in the U.S., this option has been dropped from the 2009 lineup.

To answer your question, the 4matic emblem which appears on the right rear side of the hatch didn't appear until the 2007 model year. This goes for the ML as well, they were equipped with 4matic, but just didn't have the emblem on the back. As for the mentioning of some 2006 models having the emblem it could be one of two things, the owner decided they liked the 4matic emblem on the 07+ models, went to the parts department and bought it and put it on themselves (I did this with my 06 ML) or the dealership itself went to the parts department and put it on.

I bet the badge is gone again on '09 diesels, i.e. replaced by "Bluetec."

That makes sense. Thanks for the answer.

I don't know about that. Mine is a early/mid model '06 and has the 4MATIC emblem.

This guy is absolutely correct. Early 2006's didn't have it, late 2006's and on did.

I have a Saks Edition R500 without 4matic badging.

Different Markets globally have different options

A few months ago - I was given the wrong information (from an authority who should have known better). As this thread suggests, early R classes (in 2006) didn't have the badge! Today I crawled around under mine changing the oil (and I will post pictures and directions in a seperate thread) - and behold what did I see? Prop Shafts and Rubber CV boots going to each front wheel!! That makes me happy! And no 4-matc badge.

As an added bonus - after removing my belly pan for the oil change, I noticed free hanging wires with plug ends ready for fog-lights, the assemblies for which would easily snap in to the provided clips etc. on either side of the car. I'm of the impression one would have to order a new headlight rotary switch with an additional position on it ... but must investigate that seperately. (Mine has the left park/right park light switch position for europe)

See the rewards one gets for working on your own car?

Rosswell, thanks for the fog info. I too have parking light and pulled fog switch but no fog installed. This could be an easy upgrade.

i like to ride my bike
why would you wnat a 4matic badge? to me the back looks way to loaded with the badges. I especially dislike the ML320 CDI 4Matic. The whole rear
end covered letters!!

Those who don't have 4-Matic emblem can easily add something else - a correct AMG emblem, and an R63 emblem, and a valance with wider exhaust tip holes, and the quad exhausts; on second thought - I don't think I want an extra "holder" for salty road debris to rust out a hole in the future.
