If all R Classes are 4 Matic, why do some have the badging and some don't?
To answer your question, the 4matic emblem which appears on the right rear side of the hatch didn't appear until the 2007 model year. This goes for the ML as well, they were equipped with 4matic, but just didn't have the emblem on the back. As for the mentioning of some 2006 models having the emblem it could be one of two things, the owner decided they liked the 4matic emblem on the 07+ models, went to the parts department and bought it and put it on themselves (I did this with my 06 ML) or the dealership itself went to the parts department and put it on.

I don't know about that. Mine is a early/mid model '06 and has the 4MATIC emblem.
This guy is absolutely correct. Early 2006's didn't have it, late 2006's and on did.
I have a Saks Edition R500 without 4matic badging.
As an added bonus - after removing my belly pan for the oil change, I noticed free hanging wires with plug ends ready for fog-lights, the assemblies for which would easily snap in to the provided clips etc. on either side of the car. I'm of the impression one would have to order a new headlight rotary switch with an additional position on it ... but must investigate that seperately. (Mine has the left park/right park light switch position for europe)
See the rewards one gets for working on your own car?
