Economy and vehicle sales numbers

I don't want to add to some of the prevoius posts about the sky falling regarding R class sales... I came across the following on the net from the Dec 2 issue of The Birmingham News (Alabama) where the R M and GL are made. Every other automaker is similarly affected -

Sales of cars made in the $1 Billion MB Plant in Vance: Mercedes M-Class sport-utility vehicle fell 3.4 percent from a year earlier to 2,911. Sales of the full-size GL-Class SUV, also made in Vance, fell 33 percent to 1,573.

Sales of the R-Class fell 71 percent to 313. I'd bet this will be a good time to buy one - as previous posts have mentioned. "out the door" for less.

I just drove my R through a low viz. and drift accumulation blizzard and it's the most solid vehicle I've ever driven in the winter time, making you think it's summer with the ESP and AWD.

Should MB cease production of the R altogether - I'd really consider finding an R-63 for keeps; or a 2009 R.

Already looking for a R63. Expect a new model to replace the R class for 2010.

R63 will be like the gull-wing.

I can't imagine a more collectible car.

2005 C230 Kompressor
They have dropped off on production too. At one time I would see every 3rd car down the assembly line be a 251, now its like every 5th or more(sometimes there would be a 10 car gap). Also down to 4 day work weeks instead of 5. Its been a while since Ive seen a R63 come through too....my favorite is the swb white R63

2008 R350 & 2008 C300
A U.S. spec R63 has got to be one of the most rare Benz cars of recent years. The AMG Black Series cars are probably the most rare recently, but the R63 has to be a close second. Even more rare than the so called limited runs Benz likes to produce every other month (Diamond White CLS, Saks Fifth Ave CL and C, Susan G Komen S) list goes on and on lol. I would mention that the SLR is in limited quantities, but it seems like those are readily available and an R63 is like finding a leprechaun and beating the directions to the pot of gold out of him.

shouldn't MB be more aggressive on discounting or incentives

WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- U.S. retail sales fell more than economists expected in December, the U.S. Census Bureau reported Wednesday.

Sales for food services and retail dropped as U.S. consumers have pulled back from spending while job losses continue to plague the economy.

Analysts had expected a decrease of up to 2.1 percent, but customers spent $343.2 billion during the month, a drop of 2.7 percent on the month and a decline of 9.8 percent compared with December 2007, the government said.

Sales fell October through December, dropping 7.7 percent compared to the same period a year ago.

Sales at gasoline stations fell 35.5 percent in December compared with December 2007. The automotive industry is off 22.4 percent year-to-year, the government said.

Retail food sales dropped 0.1 percent from a year ago, while furniture sales are off 8 percent. Electronic sales increased 0.1 percent and healthcare store sales increased 4 percent from a year ago.
