"NEW" 2008 Demo, P3, leather, lights, - need $$ advice

Hi

Looking at a 2008 R CLass demo, around 8k miles

P3, leather, xenon, -- sticker nearly 63000

dealer asking mid 40s -- with some room

Any opinions on the value of the P3 package?

Similar miles (or even less) 2008 P2 package are around in the mid 30s -- so this seems high

Appreciate any and all thoughts

Well..just some food for thought..but for 2009 the P3 package has been rolled into the P2 at basically no charge. Although the Xenon package is no more for 09 models and the Pano roof is now separate, so it's hard to compare apples to apples in this case. At any rate a 2009 P2 model with Pano roof and heated seats is $58k and there is an easy $15k off dealer stock (still should be, theres another thread here that we were talking about this and if its still being offered).

So I would say your initial thought is right..sounds a bit too high.

But even a 2009 P2 would not have the airmatic suspension, the leather, the xenons, the second row climate control -- correct?

2008 Leather and xenon were hard to find -- so this seems like a rare beast -- just don't know if it is worth paying premium for the lighting, the leather, the suspension, the infrared glass etc

Keep in mind that, depending on your location and state laws, the warranty ticket has already been punched and all you would get could be the remainder.

Airmatic for 2008 and up is a little vague. The full system with the Active Damping package that allowed you to raise and lower the settings yourself is gone, but a version of Airmatic is standard. It's not the full system, its listed on the window sticker as rear air suspension, but a service advisor told me it works similar to the old Airmatic in that it lowers the car at highway speeds. Not really 100% sure about that one, but the only reason I asked was I was hearing a slight whine coming from the front end and it turned out to be the air compressor for the suspension and I don't have the Airmatic package. Would be nice if any service techs here know anything about this and could chime in.

2nd Row Climate Control is now rolled into the P2 group for 2009.

The Leather and Xenon packages have been dropped for the 2009 models and the Pano roof isn't part of the P1 package its separate.

So no you can't compare exact options to options, but a brand new 2009 P2 will end up running $43k after the cash offer (although it would be easy to come in lower than that at this point if you take whats already on the lot). Only problem there would be the R classes on the lots are almost always P1 cars with the occasional rear seat entertainment system or pano roof.

The other poster does have a point with the warranty. You would assume the factory warranty (4 years 50k miles which ever comes first) so they would certainly have to lengthen to warranty to sweeten the deal. Still seems like a high price to me, but thats just my two cents.

thanks for the input guys

I have the MB Brochures for the 08 09 model SUVs and it does seems that the 08 with P3 has the active damping suspension.

We may go look at this car today -- have been told by dealer that it has not been titled so the 48/50,000 warranty hasn't started yet. And I ant to see how desperate they are to move it.

And I agree -- as part of negotiation was gonna make them extend the warranty, hopefully to 7 years/100k. Car is for wife and mileage is not an issue -- she is currently in 1999 E320 and only has 75000 miles on it. So the years means more to me than the miles.

Trouble I have is wife really wants the leather and the xenon so I can't push her to an 09 -- if this R doesn't work will probably get her a GLK.

I'm over on the GLK board too, generally driving myself crazy....

I thought we established the $10k cash marketing support was only on the 2008s - 2009's have low financing rates.
Any chance the 09's will get cash back in the near future?

8k miles. Ticket is punched when its placed into service; demo or otherwise. Has nothing to do with being titled. Don't be misled by that wording.

Ask the dealer what the 'in service date is' That is the date the warranty starts.
For example, a 2007 car may have been put in service in 11/2006. I assume demo, etc means the car is in service.

thanks guys yes will def check the in service date

This is a Herb Chambers dealer -- not exactly known for being scrupulously honest -- I know I have to watch my back...

This R thing seems so tricky I might just get the wife a GLK -- my reservation on that is it is too small to haul the kids around etc --- rrrghh.

Sort of have two threads here going about the same thing, the offer I was speaking of was $15k off and very well could have been the $10k MB offer and a $5k offer from the dealership. At any rater I'm fairly certain it was on 2008 dealer stock, but as mentioned I would think you could do the same if not better on a 2009 with or without the money kick back as long as you were dealing on current dealer stock and not a special order vehicle.

All depends on how many kids you have. The R class is a good people mover, seating seven, but when the third row isn't folded there isn't much room left over for anything else. Forget trying to put a stroller back there with the third row in the seating position. Of course thats all fixed when you lower the third row and you have a huge expanse of room.

The GLK is great if your planing on hauling around say four people and their stuff. There is room for five but honestly that seat in the middle isn't good for anyone but kiddos. The GLK's cargo area is a lot bigger than the R class with the third row seats in the seating position though, so that can help out with the added baggage of the little ones.

I'll be watching the R class improvements and follow the development of the next generation, but that GLK is swaying me right now. At this point I think I will wait till the next model year comes out and then pick up a left over at a nice discount and trade in the C. I was deeply saddened to see the price of the left over C classes, but I really needed a new car at the time and couldn't have waited. I doubt the GLK will take as big of a drop as the C (C class resale for the w204 is awful), but there should be some decent deals to be had for the left overs.

Yeah wife settled on the GLK -- made more sense for city driving when she's alone -- which is a fair amount of time. And she needs the car now.

She drove the R and just didn't see herself in it. GLK is sportier and "younger" -- really holds the road and nice roar to the engine...

Thanks for all the help tho you guys
