GPS question please

We received the disc to the navigation system for our 2006 R350 recently. It was a used vehicle and the dealer finally got around to giving it to us (I guess he took it from another vehicle on the lot). Any way we did figure out how to use most of the system (as we have a Garmin) but I do not know how to find "stores". It has "grocery stores" listed under Points of Interest and also "shopping centers" but if I want to find a Macys or other type of store can you tell me HOW lol. Thanks

mb's don't do that

only the handheld garmins, tom toms, and the likes do it.

I've had 3 mb's, all with navi's, none of which have done what you're asking...like where's the nearest starbucks? on a sub $200 tom tom, does it for you...sucks huh?

I was afraid that there was no help for me. Now I see attaching the Garmin to dashboard and use MB Navigation too. Crazy but you do what you have to do lol. Thanks for your answer.

I do the same thing man. It really sucks. If you have used Acura's/Honda's nav, you'd laugh at MB's. I still can't understand why MB can't make their COMAND as user-friendly and robust as their Japanese counterparts.

MB Navs are nothing to write home about. Germans focus on making the vehicle drive good instead of feeling like a washing machine. I guess the perfect car would have a German suspension and Japanese electronics.

Exactly. My wife keeps on saying why can't the Germans just outsource the electronics to the Japanese. Is it just too much pride on the Fatherland? They can't deny the fact that their electronics are just generations behind Japan's.

My 07 Acura RL GPS not only give me the name of restaurant but also lists the restautant contact phone number. I also can use voice command to raise or lower AC temperature / fan speeds and many other things.

The NAV in your R-class is made by Alpine--very Japanese.

Pretty much the same thing as in our GL and since the data comes from NAVTEQ in any event ... .

NAV in our E-class is indeed German (Becker) and has a nice little feature where the dashboard clock automatically resets when the car physically crosses a timezone border. Not in the GL and I therefore think the German version is better.

The 09 hard drive based NAV has it all... also recalculating the route after missing a turn is almost an instant...

Mitaka,

It is good to hear.
Finally, MB caught up with my Acura RL GPS which does the same as yours 2 years ago. I am sure MB will do more than that like dual screens for driver and passenger to view two diiferent things at the same time.

I don;t think anybody has done the retrofit yet. The unit itself is about 3K on eBay. I am guessing when the price comes down people will try to retrofit.

Dude, whether it's Japanese or not you gotta admit those Japanese cars got way better electronics that what MB has to offer; way better features, way better UI overall. It doesn't matter which country the unit was from. You have got to get in an Acura, Infiniti, or a Lexus and try their electronics.

All I can say is the more we use this Nav for 06 the more I find it ridiculous. The routes it wants us to take sometimes are so far out of the way and no roads have not changed in my part of Long Island to make a diffference in GPS. I think we will be using the Garmin for any long trip we may take.

I agree with above posts if you compare the older 06-08 MB COMAND interface to a luxury Japanese ride, but I have to say the 09 Mercedes interface blows the RL (for example) out of the water. 6 Disk DVD changer in dash- you can watch movies right on the front screen. The interface graphics are much classier, resolution is better, memory reader, iPod etc., is seamlessly integrated with COMAND on screen controls. If you have a rear ent. option is also pretty amazing...

Not bad, Hard drive = process faster > DVD Rom

Mine 07 RL has only 6 disc CD changer in dash and play single DVD* movies in motion on 8" OEM LCD (not 6.5" as in MB)
Consider 6 Disc DVD changer to replace single DVD player in the trunk near future .

* I installed myself.

Standard OEM has 6 Disc CD in DASH. It only plays cd & DVD-Audio.The DVD drive for GPS is in the trunk & I do not think it play DVD Video.
I hooked up after market DVD player that can play DVD Video on OEM LCD.It is located in the trunk but can access from inside rear middle seat.
I plan to upgrade either 6 or 10 Disc DVD changer in the future.

Off topic:Here are pics of outside/inside of my RL

MB probably made it crappy on purpose

so that you would buy the teleaid extended option...hit the button, and call a "concierge" like person...they find stuff, make reservations, and all that for a yearly fee.

Also on the newer models, you could send directions to your nav thru teleaid from Mapquest.com

Nav in MB...LOL!!!

The Nav in the my MB R500 is terrible!!! I drive an O6 Infiniti and I have an 06 MB. They are light years apart!!! The Infiniti is amazing!!! Voice, Color, Birds Eye view, user friendly, etc... The MB is terrible. Not even in the same league. I love the R but the Nav and the steering wheel controls pal in comparison to the Japan cars!

I agree that the NAV in some Japanese models is much better, but how does the Infinity compare in other categories such as handling, acceleration, styling etc. How about steering wheel feedback from the road? I don't have experience with Infiniti, but I have owned other Japanese cars. They all felt like extremely light vehicles, even when they are not. The handling is perfect for casual drivers (like my 70 year old mother) but not for spirited drivers. Definitely not a car enthusiast's ride.

Hard to compare

I have a Infiniti M and my wife drives the MB R. They are just two totally different rides but I must say I have a lot of experience with MB, Lexus and Infiniti. It is true that MB ride and handling are great but my M is not far behind or pretty close to even. My brother drives a E350 Sport. I love his ride but we both agree that each car has it benefits and down sides. He loves certain things about my car and I feel the same about his. The newer Japan Luxury cars are really catching up with MB and BMW. We bought the R because there really was nothing else like it in the Market Place and we just love it!
