Forget, forget, forget about "oil weight."
You MUST use an oil that meets Mercedes specification MB229.5.
This is in your "book." (owners manual)
I have, BTW, never in decades of automotive experience found oil change instructions in an owners manual.
Don't fear, however, Mercedes has you well cared for. Just get the service DVD.

For all practical purposes, the only motor oil you're going to find that is Mercedes approved is Mobil 1 0W-40 European Formula.

My first oil change was $128 from the Stealer (not bad for $30 labor, the rest is cost of oil and oil filter). Service A ($250.00) was due to oil change in one year and my R had only 4000 miles on it. My SA told me to do oil change only.(free tire rotation)

What Mobil 1 weights are good for the r350?
Do I have to use a suction pump or is there a drain plug I can use?
Whats the difference with the euro oil and the us oil?
Thanks for the help

My dealer just gave me a "service A" oil change (which is the periodic 15,000 km interval requiring nothing more than an oil change) that utilized Mobil 1 Formula M 5W40. (not on 229.5 but that's okay). I have changed it myself and used the specified Mobil 1 0W-40 European Formula. I'd suggest you don't muck about with another oil unless it's on sheet 229.5...yes there is a drain plug on the pan - but you have to remove the black plastic belly cover first and then have a replacement copper washer for the drain plug. MB just sucks 8 litres out of the dipstick. Then there is the fleece MB oil filter cartridge. You can probably save yourself some $ if you do it yourself - since my service A just cost me $500 Cdn.

Going back a few years now - sheet 229.5 and sheet 229.3 are listings of Multigrade engine oils approved for use in your MB-R class engine. 229.3 shows many more oils - but from memory I think you want to use 229.5 to go the max. kms before another change (15,000) - and the computer will ask you which sheet/oil you used after a change. 229.3 shows 0W-30, 0W-40, 10W-40, 5W-30, 5W-40, and 5W-50, and 229.5 only specifies 0W-30, 0W-40 and 5W-30. There are brands of oil specified for many countries - (Portugal, Serbia, Italy, etc.) to buy - so go with something on the list available in North America like Mobil - 1 or Pennzoil Q European Engine Ultra.
In short - just buy the Service Manual on DVD.

I got mobil 1 0W40 and a fram filter from Kregan auto. I sucked the oil out. That took a while. The fram oil filter gave me o-rings and I couldn't find what the small o-ring went to.
I got 8.5 quarts in.
What range of service does that cover? does it fully explain all the ABCDE----

I believe there is an extra O-ring included for the MLs or another model which has a different plastic oil filter core but uses the same filter .... you should have replaced the two small ones at the narrow tip and the larger one on the top flange. I assume you checked your dipstick level such that the "max" level is not exceeded. Your service should last 15,000 kms before another oil change is required. You should also investigate resetting the service indicator - on another link somewhere here.

0W-40 is pretty thick stuff & will damage the engine if you live anywhere it's cold.
5W-40 is what they recommend and put in my R320.
I've always let the dealer perform this service & have never been unhappy.

First of all 5W-40 is "thicker" than 0W-40.
But, if you actually check Mobil specs you'll find they both have the same cold pour point and in fact it will be the same for 10W versions, too. These are 21st century synthetic oils and "thickness" is pretty much meaningless.
0W-40 is best for gasoline engines but diesels MUST use the 5W-40/229.51 version and it's ok for gas engines, too. Dealers only have the one in their automatic dispensers.
Any other versions of Mobil 1 are NOT suitable.
