Hi Asian, nice to hear that you're finally logging in some miles on your R. Yeah, considering its size, it really does give us good mileage specially on long highway trips. I also get 24 miles to the gallon on my frequent trips back and forth from NY to Boston.

I assume that's for the gasoline engine which is awesome.

Good for you and it sounds like you enjoyed it.

Last weekend we did a 900km very mountainous road trip, fully loaded and pulling a fuelled up Seadoo. We averaged 8.8L/100km.

Wow...

You guys get crappy fuel economy. My engine > your engine.

Now, I hate to break this to you all, but the cluster is very generous with it's estimate of the fuel economy. I've noticed about 10% less fuel economy than what's indicated on the display. This is in just about every Mercedes I've driven.

I average about 21MPG as measured at the gas station.

I never understood the concern for fuel economy when purchasing a high end vehicle. Rapid depreciation of Mercedes Benz should be the number one factor... not fuel economy.

21+ mpg on non diesel three ton vehicle is excellent.

Oh, I agree with the whole lack of concern in regards to fuel economy in such vehicles.

I keep track of actual fuel economy as part of my patented process to gauge how the engine is running. Nothing more. But I do get a lot of "no way"s when I answer people's question of "What's the fuel economy on that thing like?"

MB should tout fuel efficiency in their vehicles like other mfrs do. I understand MB buyers have other priorities in mind - but our R350 gets the same gas mileage as the 06 Honda Odyssey Touring it replaced. Honda is proud of thier gas mileage figures and aggressively advertises it. My experience is Honda MPG figures are too generous and I could not get anywhee near their claims (20/28 advertised, real world 13/23) - whereas I beat the advertised MPG figures of both MBs we have had.

I agree cyeung65.

My Odyssey mileage is terrible, I think a Tahoe gets the same mileage as my Honda. The 320R is way better in all areas.

BUT - I bought my R looking for longevity and durability.

I agree with your comment regarding the fascination with fuel economy. It is way overrated especially when gasoline prices are very low here in the US. In most European countries the cost is about 3-4 times what we pay here. Also, people go to great lengths to increase mpg, forgetting that sometimes they pay out more than the benefit they receive.

As far as the rapid depreciation is concerned however I disagree. Do Mercedes vehicles depreciate? You bet. Especially the higher-end ones, since they have a lot of room to move down... For example, a S-class costs somewhere like $90,000 + when new, and it costs $50K after 3 years. Do you consider that unreasonable? I don't. It happens to ALL mass produced daily driver type vehicles, not only Mercedes.

Now, if you are talking about the R-class, then I don't think the depreciation of that car is representative of all Benz models. The R-Class for many reasons has not sold well and therefore its price as a used car drops substantially. Add the recession on top of that and you have even more depreciation (especially in 2009).

Sorry for shifting to a different topic but I think it is a good one.

I'm all about seeing how far I can go on a road trip without stopping. Not really concerned about fuel economy around town. Its an AWD suv/wagon, I did not buy it to save the planet.

I am having trouble understanding what everyone means about range. What's the big deal if you have to stop and refuel every 350 miles as opposed to 400? And I don't want to hear that "I am too busy to go get gas 1.1 times per week, I'd rather go once". Nobody is that busy all the time.
