What is the difference between comfort and sport ride on an R350? Also, what are the advantages of one over the other. Thanks for the info.

If you are referring to the C/S button, it controls the behavior of the transmission as follows: When in "C" (=Comfort) the transmission always starts in 2nd gear, therefore giving a smoother experience. It also changes gears at lower RPMs throughout. When you select the "S" (=Standard) the transmission behaves sportier, by starting on the first gear (which is rather short) and keeps it in gear until the RPMs are higher and then changes to the next gear. I normally keep it in S, unless I am hauling the entire family and the in-laws in which case I keep it in C for a smoother ride. Some people claim they see no difference but all you have to do is select C and then punch the gas pedal and go for a quick ride. A few minutes later do the same in S and you will see the difference.

If your car has full airmatic then you also have a button that controls the suspension.

All these are in the owners manual. If you don't have one, go to the Mercedes Benz site and register your car (always a good idea) and download a pdf copy of the manual.

thank you for the help. My salesman said to use S=standard to save gas. That sounds backwards to me. I thought the higher the RPM the more fuel used. Which is correct?

Thanks, I really like it and so far it is getting better mileage than I expected, so that settles some concerns I had over cost. My Lincoln got 16 in town, my Mazda 23 and so far R350 is running between 18-20 so I think that is pretty good.
My 8yr old was so glad when she saw i had bought it. She is really enjoying the room in the back seat. After a Lincoln, the Mazda 6 was pretty cramped.

I also believe your salesman has it backwards, however any difference in consumption between the two should be rather small. Your 8 year old loved the car for a great reason... The back (middle row) seats! The R has the best back seating there is. You feel like royalty back there, and have tons of room.

I get better gas mileage by a couple MPG in Sport mode.

I bet that's because you step on it harder in C mode to make up for the difference.

IMO I think the car uses more fuel in C mode. We have the R350, and you wouldn't want to be hauling more than two adults in select C the car really struggles to move the weight of the car and any passengers when this mode is selected thus burning a lot of fuel and putting stress on the torque converter. I would guess this isn't an issue in the R500, but on the 350 I don't buy that C mode saves fuel.

I dont think C mode is advertised as a fuel saver mode. It is for a more comfortable ride since it shifts less through the gears.

Just picked up an 06 R500 for my wife earlier this month. I was under the impression that the S/C options designated Sport vs. Comfort options for suspension rebound/damping rather than for transmission shift timing...no?!

...This site is teaching me much; and reminding me of how little I actually know

It's also better for snow/ice driving.

In the 1990s thru about 2002 this button in other Mercedes was labeled W/S.

R500 C/S Mode

Much talk about the gas mileage when either in the C or S mode for the R350, what about the R500? Which mode is ultimately better? Keep in mind, it is just my wife and I, driving mostly highway.

Thanks in advance.

I don't think there is much difference in either of the two models. Especially if you primarily doing highway driving you are using the same gear at the same constant speed the majority of the time.

Thank you for the reply. I have been doing some research and you mentioned, the differentiation is minimal.
