Snow trip with my '08 R 350

Anyway just got back from a winter family trip with my wife and son using our '08 R350. This vehicles gives more confidence when driving on snow & ice than any other vehicle I've ever experienced in similar conditions. Anyway it's hard to tell but I made it up this very steep hill near our cabin with little to no effort. I did have to turn off the traction control though as it seems a little too agressive when driving in 3-4" snow uphill.

The Mercedes 4-Matic is amazing to say the least. Anyone else with a similar story using their R-Class in the snow? I can't think of a more secure/ safe vehicle to tote the family around in under these conditions. Sometimes I feel Mercedes built this car just for this sort of driving.

It is good to hear.

If you have snow tires, it will even handle better on ice.

I drove in heavy snow last year with my 08 R350 and it handled great too.

Nice video! What's the best mud & snow tire to put on the R for great traction? I tried to go up a steeper hill that wasn't plowed like in the video and got about 3/4 of the way and had to back down.

I think I could have made it if I had something other than the OEM Conti 4x4 Contact all seasons with 70% tread left on them.

If my wife & son were not with me I would have tried a traction control deleted full throttle run for it a second time

Where and what was the button that you pushed for traction control?

I have a button labeled "ESP" and that stands for "Electronic Stability Program".

Does that effect the suspension and/or traction?

Not quite an accurate description of what took place. The Subie is wearing summer rubber, not so-called all season tires. Based on TireRack's videos, the outcome would have been only slightly better with the ASTs in comparison to the winter tires. The recommendation for winter tires is valid - for the conditions at hand.

I just read the manual and the "ESP" effects the traction of the wheels. It is off when the "!" is illuminated.
Now know!!

Mercedes Benz S 550
indeed r class mercedes performs well under all conditions including winter and snow. the all season tires and the towing capabilities of the car does the job . of course the state of the art safety system is such a relief while in such conditions.
