Flat tire and can't open rear hatch

I knew I should have addressed the rear hatch issue 2 weeks ago when it started, but the thought of dragging my 2 youngest kids to the dealership, swapping out all 4 carseats for a rental was more than I wanted to deal with. I decided to put it off until the next service visit...

Then last night I got a flat. Guess I need to get into the rear cargo area to get the jack..

My rear hatch won't open at all. When I hit the button in the car or on the key, it makes the sound like it's trying to open (actually, it's a teeny bit softer than the sound it makes when it does actually open). The door moves a millimeter or so but then gets sucked back into place. Is there anyway to manually open this?

try going inside the rear hatch, they have the knob where you could try opening it. thats for safety option incase kids are stock inside the trunk.

Do you not have the owner's manual? Page 123: Handle is located on the right of the tailgate's window trim. Push it then pull it to unlock it.

Thanks! Manual was in the back with the spare tire. I was looking for someway to open it from the exterior of the car. Got the tire changed, now to find replacements tires in stock close by...

O haha... That's a catch22 right there.

Glad to hear you got it figured out. Good luck hunting down the tire.

ajaeger,

I highly recommend Radial Tire Co. of Silver Spring. They are not exactly convenient to your home base but you will find that the trip is worth it. They are located at 9101 Brookville Rd, Silver Spring, MD. Their phone number is (301) 585-2740. If you are a member of MBUSA, they will give you a discount.

Call them to discuss your options on tires before you make the trip. They are very, very knowledgeable on MB requirements.

They have a large waiting room upstairs that is child safe. I've been buying tires from them since 1975.

What "requirements" would there be besides size and speed/load rating?

One consideration is whether you want to use season-specific tires or so-called "all-season" tires. I run Michelin summer tires in the summer and Michelin Alpin winter tires in the winter, even here in No. VA. When it snows, I don't want to have to wait for the folks using All-Season tires to figure out how to get out of the way while they are stuck in the snow and frozen slush. With winter (formally called "snow") tires, I can drive around anyone who may be blocking the roadway, even if it means going over the center island or onto a curb. During the last few summers (from 2007-2009), I autocrossed our R500 once a month using summer high performance tires. If you haven't tried driving your car assertively, it handles quite well under autocross conditions. If you're not familiar with autox, go to www.gws-mbca.org and look at any of the videos to see how autoxers put a car through the cones. The videographer never managed to get an image of me on the course. However, there are some stills of me sitting in line if you look at photos from 2009-2010.

Back in the day when I was toting my girls to school in the winter along Sleepy Hollow Rd in Falls Church - in a Honda Civic, I always used snow tires to be sure I was as safe as I could be under winter conditions. But back then, there was no such thing as car seats. I used midi-70's vintage harnesses to keep them in place. They are 42 and 39 now and the younger one has three kids of her own.

Best wishes.

JR

Hey JR thanks. That would be a personal preference and not an "MB requirement."

I am familiar with AutoX. I used to do some racing on the track.

I would've loved to see the R500 on the track!

BTW Julian, that's quite amazing that the R500 was faster than a C36 AMG!

I was surprised too. I think the AMG driver was a newbie then. He's since moved up (over?) to a Porsche and gotten more into track days. I've been autoxing since 1978. I've gotten much better since I started driving Benzes what with the traction control OFF option, 7-spd auto (leave in 2nd, car will start in 1st and hold 2nd unless it reaches redline; knock down to 1st when exiting a tight turn). As I've gotten older, I don't require the same degree of coordination with the automatic as I needed when I was driving manuals in all my previous cars (except for a 95 Crown Vic on all-season street tires).

Thanks JR, I will look into Radial Tire. I was able to get the tire plugged but they are getting close to their end. Normally I go with an all-season tire, but maybe I'll look into two sets. I do a lot of highway driving with the kids and need to keep moving, even inthe snow.
