Question Fault Codes 1208 (P0016), 1207 (P0017)

Hello group I would desperately appreciate some information connected to this issue Fault Codes 1208 (P0016), 1200 (P0017)? My Indy said these were the cause of the check engine light coming on and staying on in my wife's 2006 R350. No other faults were recorded or stored. He gave me an astronomical price for repair 4k-6k. Is there some type of recall on the R-Class for this or goodwill from MBUSA? I have been reading other post but most are incomplete or to old. I have a date with a certified dealer in a few days. Excuse my ignorance if I have repeated a post.

Here are my specs. ANY assistance would be thoroughly appreciated.

Thanks for the speedy reply. So what is my course of action. I have read that MBUSA gave goodwill allowances for these situations. Is it the case for this. I really don't have 6-9k for a car that is blu booked at 17-19k. Does Mercedes make any accommodations?

goodwill is up to the dealer. if you have owned this for a while and have regularly serviced it at benz then they are much more likely to help than if you just bought this thing used and now want to walk in to a dealer and expect them to do it for nothing. a big part of goodwill is going to depend on if they see you as a good customer or not but it certainly can't hurt to try.

Ok, thanks for the info. So here is my plan. I am going to purchase an extended warranty and wait the 30 days till it kicks in and then after the 30 days and the warranty is active I will get the work done. I wont have the dealer check the check engine light until after the 30 days. The warranty covers all engine, tranny, struts, air bags, all electrical, and "luxury" electrical for 5 years. It was 3k over 18 months and that is looking at the cost of the possible job of 6k-9k right now, it is definitely the lesser of two evils. Can anyone see any flaws in the plan? Remember I am a newbie so to me it sounds like the best way to go.

I would wonder if the car stores the date/time/mileage history for the error code. And, if so, does the warranty company cross reference any of that before paying a claim.

Thanks TopEndS62, I have been with my Indy for years now and they made the suggestions for the warranty. If there was any issues I would take it back to them and have them erase the history about a week or 2 before taking it to the dealer for the fix. *UPDATE* I went to introduce myself to the cert dealer yesterday. There was a cam solenoid campaign still open on my R so that gave me an opportunity to rub shoulders with them. Bwuh Hah Hah....my plan is unfolding nicely LOL!

P0016 and P0017 are the equivalent of balance shaftsprockets are worn out.

Repair cost is: labor 38 hrs x local dealer shop per hr.($110 to $170) = $4180 to $6460.

Parts between $600 to $2000. In conclusion $4800 to $8400.The reason is the poor material combined with poor heat treatment, could be anengineering mistake or a poor supplier mistake(s) . As long it happen after 50Kmiles is the number one money maker for a dealer. “Goodwill” is just a simplejoke “if you spend $6000 you can get $1000 reduction. I didn’t include the profit on parts. I askedto get the parts for $1000 and the answer was negative. Only the clients thatwill spend $6000 will receive the $1000 in goodwill.

The sad story is that I had a similar problem 35 years ago witha Russian Lada 1500…..what a strange parallel I should keep it, I could replace the cam shafts every 30,000 kmand cost me less than R350.
