2006 R350 Transmission wont engage

Driving home from the store the other day and when I pulled out onto the main road my transmission would not shift out of 1st gear. When I went to pull into a parking lot to get off the main road the transmission dis-engaged completely. I shut off the vehicle, turned it back on engine was good, shifted into drive (showed 'D') on the instrument panel, heard the click come from underneath so it sounded fine, but nothing. when the gas pedal is pressed the engine revs but the tranny is just not engaging.

Plugged in a basic OBD II and got P0722 and another cam shaft timing code.

ESP, SRS and ABS lights are on.

Any thoughts!?!?

Please help!!!!

The sad news is that the OBD does not read the TCU, it reads what the TCU sent to the ECU and that is a generic fault that says I the TCU has a problem.

The other news is that you need diagnostic software that can read the TCU to tell you the correct problem, however you can try to clear the 0722 fault in hopes that it does not return once you engage the shifter----does it clear and not return---yes or no!!

I was able to get the code removed, check engine light off but the car still wont move. Shifter shows 'D' and 'R' when put in each, I can hear something happening under the vehicle when I do switch, but the car won't move. Engine revs when gas pedal pushed, transmission isn't engaging at all. Error code has not returned, but since the vehicle isn't moving maybe that is the reason.

Yep all you did was clear the ECU---you still have the TCU issue and that is dealer or equal diagnostic time!!

If I get my hands on a proper diagnostic tool, is it possible to clear the TCU issue so that I may drive the vehicle? Obviously directly to a mechanic, just don't want to tow it in if I don't have to.

That's an expensive transmission and if it were me I would do the diagnostics(learn whats faulty) before I atempted to drive the car,but it's you call.

Perfect, I agree. But to clarify, the proper diagnostic tool does have the ability to clear the MB code and allow the tranny to start working again?

It has the ability to clear the fault---but the fault will return if you don't repair the fault!!

No, you may have mechanically broken the transmission. Even if you are able to clear it and drive it i would not. There is obviously something wrong with it, driving it may cause more damage to an expensive transmission all to save on a $100 tow bill.

We do transmissions, it doesnt sound like a issue thats electrical or that clearing codes is going to make it movable.

Went through this nightmare with a R500, ended up getting a rebuilt transmission 3/36K warranty. It started as a skip from 1st to 2nd gear, I stopped driving it, took over to the shop to get the diagnostic done and transmission guys there looked into it.

Thanks all for your input. I am trying to get my hands on a more detailed MB code reader, I'll post results and get everyone's input once I do.
