New Tire Options?

I have a 2008 r350 4matic 255/55/18 and need to get new tires. I dont want to put cheap tires on and also don't need expensive. I live in the charlotte area so all seasons will be fine, no severe snow needed. My wife drives it so it doesnt need 130 mph rated either, unless of course thats whats needed.

OEM seem to be continentals 4x4 but they don't seem well received. I local shop gave me a good price but I think they are cheap tires rated for light suv/crossover. Cooper Evolution and falken ziex ct60. another store gave me bfgoodrich advantage t/a sports that were a little high ( I found them cheaper on tirerack).

Thanks in advance.

I am now leaning on Pirelli scorpion Verde all season plus... not sure what my local guy can give me. Wal-Mart has them for 168.64 a tire. I may be able to use that to get discount tire down. They seem like a popular choice. Rated 740 a a, 65000 miles. And 109h. I now know what that stuff means.

People seem to go away from continentals to either the scorpion or the Michelin
The original Michelin Latitude that was an OEM tire and aftermarket is getting old and now replaced by the Michelin Defender(highest mileage family sedan) and Premier (high performance luxury)

I got the Premiers for my R and the Defender for my older C240

Some seem to like the Yokahama Geolander.

Stay away from cheaper brands The R is tough on tires.

For what its worth, Consumer reports gave the MIchelins top rating.. the Scorpions less so. Make sure you get 109 load rating and at least H speed.

I am going with the pirelli scorpian verde a/s plus 109h. @ discount tire. Total is about $800 with road hazard, installation, tpsm changed, tax and disposal. I got them to match walmarts price. I went with discount tire because they do free tire repair, rotation and balance. and we have a bunch around here including near where my wife works. I thought about tirerack.com which i bet would have been a little cheaper. (may $20). but i liked the free rotation and balance i get at discount. They were also open later then most places to get them installed after my wife gets home.

I also considered bridgestone dueler h/l 422 ecopia because thats what was on the vehicle when we got it. They were not new and we got over 50k. never had any issues with noise or handling in any weather.

thanks again for the help.

I'm running Toyo on ours (I believe they are Celsius if IRC), So far so good. They are all Weather and are good in snow.

I have never been a fan of Continental.

I'm such a skinflint.., never have spent +- $800 on a set of tires for a car.

What kills you: the oddball tire sizes, combined with loading/speed rating, and the run-flat dealio.
I had the 19's - switching to the 17 in rim from earlier models or ML gets you a much more common size - though you will need to buy longer lug bolts.
I was able to get into 109 H rated in 17's (Nokian Entyre 1) from Walmart, for $300 (plus hazard) mounting and balance included.

These tires so far have been pretty quiet. They are a harder compound than what's typically on offer for the R.
But I live in southeast US, and the summer heat would take the avg tire mileage of what, 30k?, down to 15-20k.
There's No Way I'm going to be buying an $800 set of tires every year!

The rims and bolts cost me $200 + I think $35.
Car-Part.com is your friend.

BTW, anyone interested the the take-offs, PM me - they are (19x8), these:

Dunlop Cross Contact have about 6 months left on them.

I'm on my second set of Scorpion Verde's (A/S - 19 inch) - first set was the original Scorpion Verde, second set was the Verde plus. I really like these tires, especially vs the OEM Continentals. The Verde Plus are noticeably quieter than the original Verde too, so even better. Wear has been decent - this car is pretty hard on tire wear. I have dedicated snows - so rotate the tires on every changeover. Anyway, I will likely buy them again. Good tires!
