It seems the W164/X164 platforms may share parts or portions of the architecture. Look at mercedesbenzstarparts at the X164 TXV and it can be imagined that is it similar to the R-Class. The parts diagram requires some guesswork.

I had the guy snap a couple of pictures. You can see the tire in the left lower corner.
This confirms my theory that the valve isn't in the engine bay/firewall. You can see the lines came through the inner fender wall and down, then insulated and head under the floor, just beneath the steering column.
Now where?

I f you find it let me know. I have one in a box as I suspect it might give me problems again I think the spring.
Discharge air conditioning system
Remove partition wall between wheelhouse liners (visible in the photos posted in this thread)
Remove engine trim panel
Remove air filter
Remove (additional?) partition wall/bulkhead
Relieve pressure on cooling system
Remove nut and bracket from high and low pressure refrigerant pipes, remove pipes
Remove bolts and remove expansion valve part A1648300084
Per EPC the same expansion valve part number is used for the rear A/C system.

So, I found the tx valve on my R300. I thought it was going to be a nightmare. But after removing the front and rear engine covers it only took 2 10mm bolts to find it. It’s behind the rear engine trim as shown in the pics.
