Help! I charged my R350 with front cigarette lighter and now the car won’t start
The car won’t unlock or recognize both keys.
I used the manual key to enter which sets the alarm off.
Is there a way to fix this? Any help is appreciated.
I just bought such a charger last week and had the intention to also trickle charge my class R this way. Should I not..? Did you find out that our R are not compatible with these chargers?
Besides, even if there was a direct line between the lighter and battery, it would most likely be off when you remove the keys.
Honest, been driving and fixing cars for 45 years and never dreamed of charging via the cigar lighter.
Just did a google search and there is just so much misleading information on this subject. Sad.

If you want to wire in a standby charger on the R class, you'll need to wire a direct line from the battery/fuse box underneath the passenger seat, the fusebox in the spare tire compartment on the main positive terminal, or the jumper locations under the hood.
Somehow the Cigarette Lighter Charger, drained my Car battery to the point where I had to manually open my doors with the key. Due to the drained car battery, the car wouldn’t recognize the keys or start.
By charging the car using the Red (+) Post and the (-) Body Post in the engine compartment I was able to start the vehicle. I took it for a long drive and all seems fine now. Hopefully the battery isn’t damaged. The vehicle seems fine now.
I did a bit of research and it seems that I could have charged the R350 with the 12V outlet in the trunk.
Lesson learned. From now on, I will only set up a trickle charger to the engine compartment (+) and ( - )

My battery was actually damaged from charging through the cigarette lighter and had to be replaced. Luckily there was no other damage to the vehicle.
