Help! I charged my R350 with front cigarette lighter and now the car won’t start

Hi All. I made a mistake by trying to trickle charging my car through the front ashtray lighter.

The car won’t unlock or recognize both keys.

I used the manual key to enter which sets the alarm off.

Is there a way to fix this? Any help is appreciated.

you could try to disconnect the battery for 10 min. to clean all cods, and try from there.

Why a mistake?
I just bought such a charger last week and had the intention to also trickle charge my class R this way. Should I not..? Did you find out that our R are not compatible with these chargers?

I don't think any of the 12v ports are of the "always on" variety. This would mean that you could inadvertently power systems that shouldn't be receiving power when off, and without a battery to buffer it, can cause voltage spikes that can damage computers.

This isn't the 1970s, Every device is controlled by a SAM.
Besides, even if there was a direct line between the lighter and battery, it would most likely be off when you remove the keys.
Honest, been driving and fixing cars for 45 years and never dreamed of charging via the cigar lighter.

Just did a google search and there is just so much misleading information on this subject. Sad.

It depends on the car, and you have to know your car. Many American cars have always on lighters that you can plug a charger into as long as you don't exceed the amp rating of the lighter.

If you want to wire in a standby charger on the R class, you'll need to wire a direct line from the battery/fuse box underneath the passenger seat, the fusebox in the spare tire compartment on the main positive terminal, or the jumper locations under the hood.

DO NOT charge your MB using the front cigarette lighter!

DO NOT charge your R350 with the front cigarette lighter plug.

Somehow the Cigarette Lighter Charger, drained my Car battery to the point where I had to manually open my doors with the key. Due to the drained car battery, the car wouldn’t recognize the keys or start.

By charging the car using the Red (+) Post and the (-) Body Post in the engine compartment I was able to start the vehicle. I took it for a long drive and all seems fine now. Hopefully the battery isn’t damaged. The vehicle seems fine now.

I did a bit of research and it seems that I could have charged the R350 with the 12V outlet in the trunk.

Lesson learned. From now on, I will only set up a trickle charger to the engine compartment (+) and ( - )

Thank you a bunch guys, you saved my battery as I was about to do the same mistake. I feel very lucky coming across your post by pure chance. Glad to know your battery seems to have survived for now.

So I did a disconnect of my battery to rest the computer systems and it seems that everything except for my battery is ok. Maybe it’s a coincidence that my batter is old and needs replacement.

Lesson Learned. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Is everything working again? Trickle charging via lighter should not have broken your battery. Consider yourself lucky that you did not blow up a SAM!

Quick Update

Here’s a quick update.

My battery was actually damaged from charging through the cigarette lighter and had to be replaced. Luckily there was no other damage to the vehicle.

lesson learned.
