AFAIK, MB made a critical mistake when the new ML did not have 7 seats - (with the rear 2 being child size/occasional). They still have no replacement model for the W163, and certainly here in the UK gave the market away to Volvo as a result (and now the Volvo is a bit stale, I'm seeing loads of Audi Q7s). I would have replaced our 2002 ML500 2 years ago (or more) if there had been a suitable Mercedes vehicle.
Now, before you all shout "what about the GL' - The GL is too big for UK roads and £20k ($40k) more than the ML - so it is not a replacement for the W163 ML, and given the attitude to 4x4 in the Uk at the moment it will be like shoving 20K down the toilet.
I'd like to stick with MB for my wife's school run and our "big" car, otherwise it will be a Q7. The ML is now 5 years old and approaching 100K miles and will become less reliable soon i'm sure.
So, I wait with expectation for the facelifted R !!

Yes, I agree... it can't happen too soon. However, there has to be a redesign. A facelift won't do, and it won't help sales-- even if they get rid of the goofy headlights.
The vehicle is too small for 6 or 7 people and any significant amount of luggage (or groceries for that matter). It needs to be closer in size to the Escalade ESV (223" overall, 130" wheelbase). The R is just 203" overall with a 127" wheelbase. I don't know to whose sensibilites the designers were trying to appeal. In contradistinction, the S-Class is 205" long and only seats 4. The S may be opulent, but the R is a prime example of the triumph of form over function.
Sliding rear doors would be a good idea as well.

They should offer the SWB here in the US. The proportions are better visually. I'd consider one at that point.

Here are the first pictures
New engines, changed front bumber with round fog lights, the V6 with 18" wheels, the R 500 with 19".
From now also with only rear wheel drive except the 500. New basis model R280. The R 500 with the already known 388 hp. from the S-class.
And probably the most important issue for this kind of cars, an 7 seats!

Well the revised R is coming this fall, but there will be no sliding doors. This really isn't a facelift though, more like some running changes to get it selling.
