Will the S-class coupe/cabriolet now become collectibles?

With the S-class coupe and cabriolet now discontinued, will they become collectibles with reduced depreciation and/or appreciation?
Your thoughts.
Thanks
Ron

Probably not. A cherry will command a higher price on BAT many years from now but to say it’s a collectors item I just do not see it.

cars are mass produced, not much special about them. unless its a limited production like a black series that are meant to be Limited and special and rare

There is nothing special about modern cars these days. I would say no. Years from now these will be like really unfixable computers with no parts available for them. Imagine trying to diagnose a misaligned lane keeping assistant 20-40 years from now at an independent shop?
the only modern car I can remotely think of that might have gained collector status is the 2001-03 BMW Z8, and that was actually a rare car with very limited production run, almost coach built. The S class is not that. The SL might even have a better chance of it before an S.
of course, some will disagree or have other thoughts around modern collectors like from Ferrari or such, but these Mercedes will not. Hopefully I’m wrong.

Is it official that the S Coupe is now discontinued ?

I don't see them increasing in value anytime in the near future, but depreciation should be much more gentle than previously with no new/updated model available from Mercedes/AMG, particularly for the 2018+ models which are more desirable with better powertrain/performance and updated electronics, also scarce with an abbreviated production in 2018 & 2020 and relatively low production even in 2019.

Without the C217, the 4-seat personal luxury coupe market belongs solely to Rolls & Bentley now, along with the more sporty than luxurious M8 and a few 2+2 models (Lexus LC500, A-M DB11, etc) which have vestigial rear seats.

Heisenberg,
Yes, 2020 is the last MY production for the S-coupe and cabriolet.
The reason for my question is looking back to 1971 S-coupes and cabriolets now command significant price increases above original selling prices.
Albeit condition is a major determinant in the value of each vehicle. Also I understand it took 49 years to realize said appreciation.
However, as you stated with production terminated and no other large coupes or cabriolets available besides RR & Bentley the price depreciation may be less than the S-sedan.
As for increased valuation I won't see it but my children and grand children may, should they decide to keep the cars.

In the thread "Last year for the coupe", M-B COO Schaefer stated "Tough decision (to cut coupe & Cabriolet), great cars, I love them. Icons, and if you have one, keep it".
Would seem to imply they retain future value.

For what it's worth, Mercedes Chief Operating Officer Markus Schaefer has stated that 2021 will be the last year for the C217. However I haven't been able to find whether or not he said that the 2021 model year production will be an updated version or just more of the 2020 model.

My point is that he referred to coupe/cabriolet as "icons".
Suggesting they may have longevity and future value.

2020 S Cabriolet, 2014 SL63, 2002 SL500
"The S-Class Coupé and convertible have however been culled".... per MBWorld yesterday regarding the new S Class lineup. So, it seems there will be no 2021 coupe or Cabriolet. I don't think people will be willing to substitute a SLclass for one of those beautiful flagship 2door cars. I guess time will tell though.

The SUV craze has left behind a wake of casualties...thankfully BMW's new 8 Series is an option albeit not quite the same experience, less lux more sport/perf, and for a bit less

I have a 2020 840iGC. If one is used to Mercedes, the 840iGC is a disappointment. Uncomfortable and poor design.

It's the general price inflation that causes higher prices on used cars. I don't think that the S-Coupe will be a classic car. Part of the problem with today's cars in general is the extreme complexity. How many of these cars will have spare parts available 20 years from now? Try to find a windshield today for an S-Class that has heads-up display. I finally managed to find one (made in China I believe), but the HUD display was not the same high quality as before.

Beautiful cars that were produced in low volume will become collectible. The more rare and fewer surviving samples the more precious. Parts are not usually a huge problem even for a very complex car such as the Mercedes 600 pullman from the 60's and 70s and they can be scavenged from junkyards as many of the Mercedes cars share many of the exact same parts, and parts 3D printing will play an even bigger role in the future as the technology is mastered. More and more car makers will stop stocking warehouses full of parts and will simply print the ordered parts on demand.

How do you print touch screen displays, chips, windshields, catalytic converters, etc? Good luck finding limited production cars in junk yards.

Most of the items you described except the windshield and especially the electronics are all shared with every standard S-Class sedan in the world produced in the 10s if not 100s of thousands and there should be no trouble finding those parts. Printing windshields should not be difficult in the future if you have the exact specs and materials and equipment. 3D printing of glass is happening now. Heck people are printing functional hand guns now.

I doubt there will be any printing of parts to cars that barely exist.

You can find 20 year old CL-600s with less than 100K miles for less than $10K today. Not much more than scrap value....

Presently 19 S560 SEDAN, 2014 XK, SOLD GLE 450e
S560's Coupes seem , to me at least, holding their value as of Sept 2021. It could be the lack of new S models etc. I know a S sedan is not a S Coupe and coupes are not made anymore FYI.

Who knows only time will tell

I personally, and it’s just my opinion but the convertible possibly killed off the S Coupe single handedly. Mercedes coupes we’re selling very well but because they spent so much money on developing the S convertible, that it ruined the budget and the sales. They were possibly one of Mercedes worst ventures along side the 2013-to present SL. You never know what the future holds but I personally would never want one. The design was in the greenhouse of the Coupe and it was lost on the convertible.

Makes no sense. Mercedes S Coupes have never sold in good numbers, but they always were kept around for the brand. What nonsense about the Cabriolet ruining the budget for the car lol. I guess you just make up whatever when you have no clue what you're talking about. They cancelled the car because it didn't sell. How the hell can a budget to develop a car ruin it's sales? Total nonsense.

What ever you say

No matter what you and I say, the convertible isn’t attractive and if you think the coupe didn’t sell well, then look at the convertible’s sales. All coupe sales are off, including 4 drs. Only Mercedes has been able to keep their sales up but my friend who is head of the Cadillac Design Team, tells me that NO cars are selling very well, especially coupes. He was telling me that Camry sales are off 84%. Now that everyone has fallen into the SUV craze, cars are no longer in vogue but as gas prices rise, all those SUV buyers who don’t drive a hybrid or electric version are going to regret buying them, especially where gas is now over 5 dollars a gallon.
