560 SEL losing oil
Dear Friends
Have bought a 60,000 Miles,Euro 560 SEL recently.
Travelled approx 1000 Kms within two days and on another occassion 800 Km within two days.
Speed on the first occasion was average 170 Kms/Hour and the second time ,120 Km/H.
On each occasion, the engine oil was reduced by approx. 500 CC upto 1000 CC.Oil used is TOTAL 7000.
There is no evident smoke.
Can you help me pin point the reason for this oil loss.
Mechanic says that it is "evaported" by the engine.
Would appreciate some help
Many Thanks
Evita

I wonder, has this been sorted?
Sorry for not replying to you PM Evita, I never, ever think to check my PM inbox
I think if it were a valve train issue there would be evident smoke, I've not been witness to evaporating oil so can't comment on that phenomenon
Sounds to me like a plain old oil leak, I would be checking the gasket seals around the engine, including the oil pan and sump plug but, as I've said before...I'm no expert on the matter
Let us know how you got on with the problem...and again, I apologise for not trying to help sooner

PS, "evaporated by the engine" is stupid - get another mechanic, one with an IQ larger than his belt size.

Use conventional engine oil in the 560 SEL
Dear Evita,
Do not put "thin" grade synthetics into this engine. The original seals were not made for synthetics and they leak. It happened to me. Now I am using Castrol GTX diesel oil, 15W40 and the garage floor is drier. Ditto with automatic transmission fluid. Stick with OEM stuff.

Mechanic shows the problem
Dear friends
took the 560 to the authorised mechanic and this is what he found out and showed to me ;
the valve seals were ok.But the shaft which the valve seals are placed around it had vibrating movements which allowed oil to seep past the seals into the combustion chamber at the time engine was off.
I am no mechanic and do not know the exact terms!!
Sorry
The small shafts (or typets?) are being changed along with the valve seals .
Will keep you posted further
thanks bye

hi ,
actually i never had a leaking engine or "wet floor".
The engine oil was lost through usage.no leakage was ever observed.
however the oil loss was quite extensive, hence , the visit to authorised repairshop
will keep you posted after the car is delivered back.
many thanks

I have a 560SEC that I run on Mobil 1 15w-50, and has no oil consumption. I have also used this oil in my 300SE, where it drastically reduced oil consumption.
