560SEL How much?

Seems my first post didn't show up

Recently I've inherited a 560SEL. I didn't know how much it's worth or if it's worth holding on too.

car has been in the family since brand new
car has one owner besides me. 127k miles, No accidents, everything seems too work but the back driver side window.

Also does anyone know what would cause the car too stutter at idle? Is it just old? Are there common problems I can look for in this year?

1988 SEL

no way!

dude back in the day those cars were the s65's of all the mercedes those were like 120,000 brand new hold onto it, if you explore it and check itout, it's got heated seats rear and front, it has adjustable seats in the back, and front, it's got a 5.6 litre V* that would def. leave a 5.0 mustang in the dust too. great cars, it sounds like that SEL needs a bit of TCL then it would shutter at idle, do an oil change, and reg. maintainence and i garuantee it wll run like new.

good 560 SEL

Great car. I note the rear wheels did not "sink in" like some early cars. The reasons for the engine "stuttering" at idle is the same as other makes. Change all spark plugs (easy to do and cheap. MB specifies Champions). Replace all the spark plug leads. Take off the air intake aluminum cover and spray into the intake plate lots of carburettor-injector cleaners while someone is reving the engine (make sure it is in park or you will be run over). Put in a couple of bottles of fuel treatment (Quaker State makes a "over 45,000 miles" fuel system treatment) into the fuel tank and gas up. Lastly, ask a tech to check the "Lambda".

The car will run better. I have just done all of the above.

I have used Mobil Supersyn on my 1985 560 SEL but the engine seals leak a lot. Better to use heavy mineral stuff like Castrol GTX diesel 15W40. Leaks less. Ditto with transmission fluid. Use ordinary MB OEM stuff and save your money.

If you look after your car it will serve you for many years in SoCal. No salt there.

I think I fixed the stutter. I was using cheap gas because of the high gas prices. Now that gas is around 2.39 I can afford too put better gas and car runs much better. I put some injector cleaners and car runs like a champ.

thanks guys.

KEEP it, IMO 560 SEL on of the most beautiful cars ever made. I am only a student and I drive a Jetta, but I am trying to get a hold of a 560 perhaps for summer use (I live in buffalo NO WAY I would subject that car to the weather). Like mentioned earlier, these cars have heated seats all the way around, rear power seats, etc for a 1980s car! There are many autos today you cannot even get those options on.

Well I decided to try to sell it and some guy offered me 2500. I told the guy I didn't know anything about the car, and he said hell buy the car without having to take it to a mechanic to check it out.

I was asking 4k

Here are things wrong, tires probably need to be replaced or balanced. Transmission takes a few seconds to go into reverse. Missing small panel on rear wheel base. Maybe needs shocks.

I've seen people sell these cars for 5-7k

KBB rated the car at $4k

Good" condition means that the vehicle is free of any major defects. This vehicle has a clean title history, the paint, body and interior have only minor (if any) blemishes, and there are no major mechanical problems. There should be little or no rust on this vehicle. The tires match and have substantial tread wear left. A "good" vehicle will need some reconditioning to be sold at retail. Most consumer owned vehicles fall into this category.

Yeah I'm from Texas
I had a friend buy a 91 civic with no power steering no power windows, 1.5 liter 80hp and banged up half painted body for 2k. So I don't see how I can let this classy 560SEL go for anywhere near that price.

I guess I'm smart enough to know 2k is way to low.
