It's pretty simple really. You disconnect all hoses and electrics that connect the engine to the chassis, remove the two bolts that connect to the exhaust, remove the two engine mount bolts. and remove the 6 torque convertor bolts. To remove the torque conv bolts turn the engine clockwise with a 27mm socket on the crank as you are facing the engine. Remove only the 13mm bolts from the torque conv. Do not remove the 10mm bolts. Push the conv back, and support the trans with a floor jack. Hook a chain to the lifting brackets on the top of the engine, and yank that sucker outa there with a cherry picker. It's always a good idea to remove the radiator to give more clearance and prevent damage.

Hineywineries,

Thanks, the only step I missed was the torque converter.

You're welcome. If you need clearer instructions on the converter, let me know. If you accidentally undue the 10mm bolts, the ring gear will fall off. You will need to line up some little holes to install or the timing will be off by 30 or 60 degrees.

Smile 420 SEL Engine

Pull engine, without a problem. I purchase a replacement engine and before I put that bad boy back in the 420, I want to replace some stuff (the rear engine seal, oil pan gasket) please tell me if I missed anything else.

I want to ensure that I don't have to have a mechanic to go back replace some stuff. I would need to know how much grease for example (and the best type of grease) I would need put on the rear engine seal and do I need any special tools. I have the MB 126 manual and it talks about applying grease according to the 226 something specification as I recall. Any help would greatly be appreciated. BTW, I'm replacing everything hoses, gaskets, plugs and fuilds (oil and trans).

Afterward, it going to the shop to ensure that she going to run perfectly and a paint job.

I personally wouldn't bother replacing the rear seal. They really are not prone to leaking. You can do the lower pan gasket if you like. IIRC there is no gasket on the main pan. I would deffinitelly change the trans front seal. It is most prone to leaking, and you will have to pull the tranny again. Pay close attention to how deep the converter goes into the bell housing. Also use a seal that comes from the dealer with all the stars on the box. There is a difference between OEM and OE. I would not waste my time putting in an OEM seal here. I don't like to pull trannys twice. Just before you stab the new engine, Post again for some critical instructions that could save you a tranny.

Thanks, I'll return the Rear Engine Seal, and replace the front tran gasket. Anything else would be greatly appreciated.
