560SEL Road Trip
Hi, I just purchased a 112,000 mile '89 560SEL. The car was well cared for and was a Florida car until just a couple years ago. My mechanical background is total do-it-yourselfer including restoring Triumph sports cars, building and racing sports cars and I formerly owned/maintained a '71 M-B 280SEL.
My fiance and I are planning a road trip from Rockford, IL to Las Vegas, NV (~3000 miles) in January, and we'd like to take the big Benz. We're planning to get married on January 1, and see the sights on the way back.
The car currently runs, drives and looks great. I plan to replace the B2 piston in the transmission before we leave. Obviously fresh oil, transmission and differential fluids. I'll probably also change the brake fluid since it looks like it could use it. Should I also replace the rear suspension fluid and filter? Any recommendations on preventative maintenance or spare parts and tools to carry would be appreciated.

High speeds puts a lot of stress on the cooling sytem I would go through it. Also check and replace your belts if they are older. Don't forget the wheel bearings it couldn't hurt to check and repack those.

Congratulations on the bouncing baby.
I wouldn't worry too terribly much, these cars go well into the 200k range so yours is still quite adolescent! Specifics on the cooling system, check the radiator. It's plastic and over time grows brittle (especially the neck). HTTP://www.mercedesshop.com is a WONDERFUL resource and full of lots of wrench-heads who can answer just about anything (and likely already have, search their archives... )

We are planning on a trip from IN to FL's Disney's in Spring when my son get off school. And yeah, we're taking the 560SEL because I have a Alpine navi on.
