hey grottoblue since u posted something in my post ill post something in urs to show you that i love you as a friend.

a 420 has a 4.2 liter engine v8
500 5.0 liter engine
560 5.6 liter engine

the bigger the more power

If im correct usually the higher end which are the 560s have more options then the 420 and 500. As longest its a SEL its long wheelbase which is longer then my car by 6 inches mine is a 500 SE

hmm besides that i think thats it ...im not sure ask our brothers here that own w126's ! im just a youngster that loves you all !

peace out !

Well actually they are very different. In the US the W126 was availible in a few models:
300SD
380SEL
500SEL
420SEL
560SEL
300SEL
300SDL
350SD
350SDL
560SEC
500SEC

production was from 1982-1991 with a facelift in 1986 and engine update.

Now as to options yes the 560's usually come with more stuff but most options could be had on all the models. Also the 560's had the active rear suspension that can be troublesome. As to the best model well it depends on what you are looking for.

To decode the letters and numbers for example lets take, 560SEL and 300SDL.

560SEL
560=5.6 liters of displacement; S means some German name that I don't know. It means special rare or something like that. E means fuel injection. L means that 6in were added in the rear seat, long wheelbase.

See 300SDL means:
long wheel base S class diesel with a 3 liter engine.

Clear as mud right?

Thanx to all!!!

I think I prefer the SELs. The 420s might drink a little less gas but not much less. I don't need the speed and power of the 560 nor the pneumo suspension problems. SDL prices seem to have gone thru the roof. So I'm looking at a dignified and less powerful gasser, I guess.

The 420SEL's provide a nice balance but I would shop for both 560 and 420 prices are cheap on both. The 560's are not anymore troublesome. Prices have pretty much hit the bottom. Good examples can be found for $5k +/-, perfect cars seem to be around $10k
