Factory Phone question
Hey all,
Quick question about the factory phone and dialing pad that's located in our vehicle. I am installing an aftermarket system in my car in the next two weeks, and the installer said that I would lose functionality of the phone (which I don't really care since I don't use it), but I wanted to know what the clearance was behind the dailing pad in the dash? Have a couple of ideas, but it involves that space. I couldn't image that it is too deep, but if anyone has removed it, or furthermore knows what is behind it would help.

It just slides in and clicks in place. Along the top edge of the unit are two notches. Insert flathead screwdrivers or something similar to press the tabs down and pull the phone unit out. Very easy to do.

I was actually going to ask about that. I heard that some people don't have the factory phone (which I thought was a standard feature) and actually have a storage compartment like what your describing.
I was actually thinking about putting a small equalizer in that location, and with a 3" clearance that might actually be enough space. Now the only thing to figure out is the wiring for it ...

Just to clarify something I may have misrepresented.
The depth along the bottom is about 3 inches. But
the depth along the top is only about 1 inch. You
would have to tilt the EQ down against the air vent.

To remove the control, release the two catches at the top and slide forward (disconnect the cables). The bracket is bolted to the top of the bin thru the bin, you might get the screws out but you will lose the nuts behind the dash. You will not gain any more space since the bin is held by two screws in the back. You can also gain space by removing the handset and cup in the console, remove the bottom and brush up the nap. There will be no loss of radio functions since the phone only muted it and the cell audio was routed to the outboard speakers on the dash! In 92 it worked that way

I was even wondering if it were possible to fit a center channel speaker in that location. Before anyone says anything, I know there already is one in the vehicle, but bare with me. What do you guys think about the following:
Now, I am keeping in mind that it would have to be tilted still, and even wondering if I could fit it deep enough such that I could still close the privacy flap covering the keypad if I were to place the speaker. I am trying to find a place where I live that actually sells the speaker so that I can get the dimensions, but let me know what you think.
