Highest Milage W140?
M
The Best of Mercedes & AMG
So in the mornings I will have to decide whether to drive the light blue or the dark blue!
The high miler just seems to go from strength to strength.
). What would you guys think of a 95 S320 with 191k on the clock for $4,200?
They'd feel like a downgrade from mine, so I plan on keeping it for as long as I can. & if this thread's any indication, I'll be driving it for a looong time...
I own a S280, 1998 which I have just bought it has 100 000 miles on the clock, and runs beautifully. I am in the UK, and I believe this model was never available in the USA as it was deemed to be underpowered.
Fuel here is VERY expensive. A litre of unleaded is 96p, this works out at $7.24 per US gallon (no, I did not get my calculations wrong, it really is that expensive). For that reason smaler sized engines are popular.
I paid my first visit to the USA over Easter, and hired a couple of vehicles. I came away a big fan of large engines, automatics and cruise control. Up to that point I had been driving a small French, diesel hatchback. Now I pass these tpes of cars on the motorway and smile
As I do about 30 000 miles a year I have just had it converted to run on LPG. I have had to tanks fitted, a 70 litre tank to replace the spare wheel, and a 100 lite tank in the boot up against the rear seat. This should give me a range of about 850 miles and as LPG is only 37p a litre it works out to be equivalent to 80mpg - which makes it affordable.
Even though I have only had my S280 for just under a month, I am never going back to 'the bad old days'. I just love the way it drives, even on the smaller, twistier, roads of the UK.
When converting it to LPG, the mechanics assured me that with regular servicing (especially fluid checks) I can expect another 250 000 miles out of it. That should see me through to retirement - and then another MB !
Actually, I am in mid-Wales and don't often visit South Wales. I used to have a microlight hangered at Swansea Airport, but that was years ago. My most recent visit was in March to Newport to get a quick passport for my son.
The W140 is certainly an unusual sight in these parts, and it is nice to have people stop and stare as you go past.
I think it is in serious danger of being classified a 'classic' any time soon, and certainly reassuring to know it was one of the last 'over engineered' models and with TLC will last for years to come.Mine is a 280, rather than the 600 - so considerably less lively than yours
It is Blue, although one of my daughters swears it is more Purple than Blue. You will recognise me if I drive past I have a permanent smile
The newer W140 S600 up around 160k miles and running really well.
V12 engines have been trouble free. They seem so understressed I can imagine both cars being good for 500k miles. I'd certainly have no worries about buying any W140 with over 100k miles on the clock.
Most vulnerable mechanical part: heater duovalve which fails and then heater refuses to give warm air. Its happened on both cars but a £30 replacement from scrapyard has fixed both.
