Gear shifter - cover of the slot

Usually in the cars with automatic transmission there is a cover that travels together with the gearshifter and covers the slot to the gearbox (covers the positions that are not in use at present).
In my car (1991 W140) there is no such cover, so the whole slot is always uncovered. Is that the case for very first production W140 (my is still 4-gear one)? Or somebody has removed it or maybe it is blocked internally... ??? Any ideas? The shifter itself works perfectly.

i know what you're talking about, and while i can only speak from having a w124 which is somewhat similar in some design regards, i'm pretty sure these cars didn't have that

It's missing on my S600 too but I noticed it has been disconnected/broken inside. I called the dealer and they said that they don't sell that individually and that I have to buy the whole shifter. I'm looking for a used one now.

Yes it can be bought individually. The problem is, to replace it.
It is simple for the 722.3/4/5 where you can get access to it from
top (or so I heard), but for the 722.6 which was installed in W140
around 1996, the whole shifter will have to come loose and dismantled.

Although not a complete DIY, I submitted some images from my
"adventure" on the 722.6 in this thread;

Exhaustive input in the topic. So coming back to the very first question, the answer is "Yes, the shutter is missing...", isn't it? Thanks.

Back to this question: assuming I have the "simpler" version, that can be accessed from the top.
How do I do this? Can you indicate any place with info on how to get to the shutter?

Thanks.

As I do not have this kind of shifter, I can only rely on
what I have read elsewhere (that I do not find...).

Try;
1. Remove trim surround between wood and shifter.
2. Remove shifter knob/stick.
3. Remove shifter gate.

Then you should have access to the shutter.
Perhaps you can gain more visible clue on doing 3. if you
remove the surrounding wood also, but I think it
can be done without.
