Just tell me you donn't live in California,washington State, or St.croix so there will never be a chance for me to get a car from you with no issues????

#87 gas for 1990 ls400, 1998 S420, no issue at all
both 90 ls400 and 98 S420 state that the #91 oil is required.
a used car dealer told me that is gammiy and #87 is fine.
that is what I doing for the last 6 ~ 7 year and no issue whatever.
if there is a problem, is not engine related, like ac fan stop working on S420 that I change the circuit board and fix it.
I also own BMW 1998 750il and 1997 740il for about a year, #87 gas works fine.
yes, I live in California.
I also test my S420 and see no MPG difference between #87 and #91, if there is, it will be so small to be ignored.
now my S420 has 150,000.00 mile and it still drive like new, love it.
I ove it since 82,000 mile.

These cars were $70-138K new...the people who bought these cars did not care about cost of car or the expense to maintain such a very expensive car.
If you cannot even afford the proper fuel, you cannot afford this car.
By the way I would recommend replacing your Fuel Filter!

The gas rating system is different in the US from NZ but run whatever you guys call premium over there. You can run lower grade with no problem but it's not as good for the cars engine and when you get to high miles you'd be looking at a rebuild. Here the difference in price means that there is about a $5-7 difference per full tank so IMO the savings are not worth it in the long run.

You are missing the point...anyone can buy a used W140 these days, but can you afford to properly maintain the vehicle...such as 91 (Factory Recommended) octane gas and $100 oil changes? How about $7000 for a new tranny if necessary? Or $4000 for the evaporator if it fails, parts and labor around 4k. Or $1500 for new bose amp, they are known to go...how about shocks (pneumatic) cost around 4k to replace all four. These cars require stable maintenance...these were cost no object cars, not price points like toyota (good cars) or honda.

I have been running my 1993 300E 2.8 with 87 octane for years with no problems in fact had to do the cylinder head gasket last winter and valves and pistons looked great. My mechanic who drives a 1998 S500 switched to 87 himself and has been burning it ever since. Try putting in a little 87 octane on near an empty tank and if it pings you can fill the rest with higher octane. I believe it is a question on how hard you are going to drive the car.
If you floor it all the time you had better stick with premium.

uhm. i run 87 gas a lot. its pointless in 91+ octane for just driving from A to B. I put 87 in my CLK55 as well.
running 87 octane has nothing to do with being rich or poor. go learn how fossil oils are refined to fuel and then tell me why 87 octane is bad. its a dumb gimmic.
i make sure my mom refills her 2008 LS on 91 Octane every 3rd tank so the computer doesnt register it and void the warranty.
