Question Questions about AMG monoblock wheels

Hi Everyone,

I recently got inspired by some W140 sedans with AMG monoblock wheels and I have a few questions:

1) During W140 sedan production were there any packages like "Sport Package" (was available for SL600) which provided AMG monoblock wheels to W140? I just can't find any mention of sport packages.

2) Which AMG monoblock wheels are considered right wheels for W140 sedan? I see there are 18x8.5 all around for sale and also you can get a staggered set of 19x8.5 and 19x9.5.

There is short thread regarding monoblock wheels here:

https://mbworld.org/forums/s-class-w...onoblocks.html

There are attached files to that thread, but it's not clear which wheels dealers should have installed on W140 as an option: 18" or 19" or it was up to a dealer/customer?

3) Also in this manual you can see that on SL600 Sport Package there were 18x8.0 and 18x9.0 monoblock wheels available. It makes me wonder how many monoblock wheels were available there for S-Class and SL-class together?

http://oudemercedesbrochures.nl/W140...0_1997usa.html

4) Are chromed wheels legit? I haven't seen chromed wheels in any brochure I found, but they are available for sale online. I just don't know if MB made them available besides regular metallic painted monoblock wheels?

TIA!

Here is a wheel catalog for different MB vehicles:

https://ragtop.org/mbbrochures/2006/wheels.pdf

It shows that there were lots of different monoblock wheels made almost for each model. Unfortunately, that brochure doesn't cover W140...

Just did this myself. You're looking for HWA 1404010102, 8.5Jx18H2 ET47. Those monoblocks are 18"x8.5 off an AMG s600(w140) and are made for the w140 specifically. They are not staggered sizes but 8.5" all four. The bit that's w140 specific is the offset @ 47mm, and that'll also ensure you get the right lug sizes.

I also believe we had the same chrome wheels. A few S's came with those stock wheels chromed. (very stupid - they eventually peel) I believe their offset is ET31, so you get a better fitted wheel with the monoblocks 47mm offset & width @ 8.5" that reduces fender/wheel horizontal gap without having to use spacers.

I included a few photos to show you the gaps.

Regards,

Chris

1999 Mercedes s420 (w140 body) with silver monoblock wheels off an AMG s600. The wheels codes are HWA 1404010102, 8.5Jx18H2 ET47.

Thanks! I wonder if you purchased a new set of rims or a used one i.e. from eBay etc?

Used off Craigslist, but those have been resurfaced (powder coat) / polished.

Sounds nice! I hope you checked for possible cracks since old rims may have cracks. Especially when you use low profile tires.

It's good idea to chec CL. I haven't checked it yet, but it seems that these wheels are not available in DE.

BTW I'm curious how much you paid? Approximately.

They were checked during resurfacing and while I doubt they have any cracks there could be other issues resulting in vibration 60-80mph. Back to the tire shop for re-spin-balancing again and hopefully that'll sort it out. 1400.

Got it. Seems $1400 is not that bad. Good luck with fixing vibration. I think it may be wheels or something else since tires are more thin now and maybe with 16" stock rims and tires you couldn't notice that vibration before. But it also depends on how bad is it. I'm not an expert here, but after installing coilovers and lowering my Honda I experienced different vibration, so I raised it a bit and it's gone or almost gone. Installing rims of different size, lowering the car etc all that may cause vibration.

No reason to go for a staggered set, get the Brabus setup: 19x9.5 ET 37 square. You can use 255 40 19 tires with no rubbing front and rear. The AMG offsets are not flush.
