Perhaps you could use a ruler and a wax pen/stick for a straight line.

2006 VW Passat
Did this before, use a ruler to measure size of letter, then get the desired height from the top of the trunk and draw the line with a pencil where the top of the letters S500 will go, and then measure the height of the letter from the pencil line and then draw a second line where the bottom of letters will be, and then put letters on.

The graphite is ok on the paint? Thats why i suggested a wax pen but pencil may be easier to find.

Even a 430 rebadged as a 500 is a no no in my book. A 500 or higher rebadged as a 430 or lower is alright I guess, but silly.

Simple, put a piece of masking tape and put the letters on directly above it. You can tape it longer than you need to eyeball it and get it level, close enough. Also, order it new and the emblem will be backtaped so you will not have to worry about letter spacing.
