Need advice for extended warranty for 03 S430

Hi,

First, is it necessary to buy that if you were me? It is about $1k per year.

I am planning to get a 03 S430 with 35k miles on it. The salesman told me about Mercury Insurance Group offering extended warranty Platinum plan for 5yrs/100k miles for $3200. Anyone has experience with that company? Are they good? Can i bring the car in to any MB dealers for service if the car has any problems during exteneded warranty? I also heard about Damiler Chrysler Max Care. Which one is better? Or any other insurance company you have good experience with?

BTW, They are asking $45k for the car. How much i should expect to pay?
(This is not Certify pre-owned by MB dealer)

Thanks.

I just bought a G-class and I bought Mercury Insurace for warranty. I'm about to use it for the first time since the window for driver's side would not go up.

Just as a guide...I got a card from Mercury on my '04 S500 w/28 K miles and was quoted $2950 to extend it another 5 years to a total of 100K miles...bumper to bumper. I was told MBUSA dealers honor this warranty and it carries a $50 deductable.

I thought it was reasonable considering.

I bought this car as a CPO from a dealer (2001 E320 w/lots of options) and I opted to extend the 12/100,000 to 24/100,000 for about $1800 extra. In the first 8 months I have used it once for what would have been about a $750 repair.

It looks like the Mercury warranties are a better deal, but I would want to be 100% sure that your preferred dealer will honor it, and exactly what it covers/excludes.

Anyone with better information on the warranty

Considering getting the extended warranty on my S430 2003 45k and paying about $3200. It would be nice to read some good feedbacks about the experiences people have had about the warranty program.
I had a S420 1996 and didn't have any problems with it, but the 2003 has so many moving parts...steering wheel column, folding mirrors, automatic drivers seat, instrument cluster etc that I think it might be a really good idea to get the warrany.

Anyone know what the known big problems are to the 2003 S Class? What can I expect and when?

Getting the warranty is a good idea. The earlier models tended to have a larger share of problems, but reliability tended to improve with the '03. However, the nature of the problems remained essentially the same - they just occurred less frequently.

You can anticipate problems with your airmatic system (struts, pump, relay); possible minor electronic problems (often curable by simple reset procedures); if your windows have additonal tinting (film), you may have reduced radio reception, key range, and potential window controller problems. The CD changer may go out. The instrument cluster has been a problem in some years, but the warranty has been extended to 10 years from initial date of service for all S-Class.

There has been a lot written already on S-Class reliability; suggest you use the terms here, and use the search feature of the forum. When you go to a string shown by your search, also check the "related" items at the bottom of the page.

Exclusions - mercury

FYI, the Mercury Platinum plan is not a true bumper to bumper warranty. An example -- the struts are not covered. The control unit and compressor are, but the struts are not.

I am attaching their contract for your reference. Refer to page 16 of 36, specifically, which lists the exclusions. I am in Florida and purchased the Platinum plan on a '03 S500 with 41k miles for $3200, good for 5yr/100k miles , 7 months ago. That's 5 years from the policy purchase, 100k miles total on the vehicle.

I have not had to use it yet, but it gives me peace of mind. As someone else mentioned, call the service department of your closest/preferred service center and make sure they work with Mercury; that's what I did.

Regards,
esprit

I just used Starmark (CPO) warranty for a $3500 repair, of which over 70% was attributed to STRUTS. The Mercury plan wouldn't have been very peaceful to my mind.

$45K for an '03 S430 seems way high. I just bought a flawless '03 S600 Sport with a $10K wheel package for $57K (28K miles). I sold my '00 S430 for $23K (32k miles). Check out eBay.

Extended warranty is a great deal. I would HIGHLY recommend it.

I got a quote today from Continental. 2995 for a bumper to bumper (excluding the wear and tear items) with a 100 deduct.

49 months/49,000 miles. That's not bad at all.
