Convert S600 biturbo -> S55/S65 AMG apperance
This is my first post on these forums, so first of all hello to everyone!
I am contemplating on purchasing a '03-'04 W220 S-class 600 biturbo Mercedes. My second option is a S55 AMG kompressor, but I would prefer the S600 due to the better performance and equipment.
My question is shortly: My plan is to go for the S600 and to make it look like a S55/S65 AMG by buying S55/S65/AMG quad exhausts and AMG front and rear spoilers. Due to warranty issues, I would stick to original AMG/Mercedes parts. Is this feasible and how much would the parts & labor cost?
BTW, the car would be purchased from Germany.
1. Is it possible to install the AMG quad exhaust if the S600 has standard (non-AMG/non-sport) bumpers i.e. is stock? What do you estimate cost of parts & labor?
2. Is it possible to install AMG front and rear bumpers? What do you estimate cost of parts & labor? The problem is that there are only few AMG-look/sport S600 available so I would probably be buying a stock S600 with no appearance modifications.
3. Do you think that if I install above #1. and/or #2. that it would void my warranty if I used original AMG/Mercedes parts and if the installation would be performed by Mercedes Niederlassung i.e. a Mercedes authorized dealer.
Please don't reply that it would be easier just to purchase an S55 as my intention is to create an "S600 with AMG-look" i.e. S65 AMG-look. Sadly, the S65 is currently out of my price range. S55 tuning to achieve S600 performance is also out of the question due to the better equipment of the S600 and warranty issues.
Thank you in advance for any help!
1. yes, but the cutouts already in the bumper will have to be cut more to accomodate the quad tips. how much it will cost depends.the mufflers with tips probably $1500 retail. cat-back will be more. purchasing from dealership will be more. labor costs depends. independent mercedes shop is $80-90/hr.
guessing around 2-3 hours. dealership will be more as they will charge $100/hr and send your car out to the same independent and add some $ to your bill.
2. yes.
front and rear bumpers are around $1500 each. then figure on painting and installation. cheaper to find used but requires hunting. very easy to pickup phone and order but you'll pay.
3. i don't know about germany but it my belief that it is illegal in the u.s. for a dealer to deny a warranty claim unless they can prove that the mod caused whatever to malfunction(magnuson/moss act). of course that doesn't stop them from trying.
i would answer "no" to your question, considering factory parts are being used and especially if a dealer is doing the install.
i am no expert in the aforementioned subject, but the information above i believe is fairly accurate.
hey, just got it from reading here!

Others: real "tuning" is out of the question due to warranty issues. That is why I just want the V12 biturbo engine with S55/S65 AMG apperance- I don't want to install the AMG exhaust because of increased performance, but rather due to the visual apperance.
ksc & others- relating to point 1, I'm guessing that no cutting is required to install the AMG exhausts if I would buy the AMG rear bumper (in addition to the AMG front bumper).
Are there any other parts/costs that would be involved to convert to AMG apperance (sideskirts etc?)? So far I have listed for the budget:
1. Exhausts approximately USD 3000 + installation (~USD 500).
2. Front and rear bumper, USD 4000 + installation (~USD 500).
=in total USD 8000 performed by authorized Mercedes dealer using original AMG parts. That would not be bad considering that the S55 seems to cost around USD 12000 more than the S600. With the above listed package, I'd have S55 AMG appearance, but better performance for lower cost!
as far as the rear bumper, get the one that already has the cutouts(ala 55/65). regular sport bumper has no cutouts.
good luck with the project and don't forget to post picts when it's completed!

Thanks very much for your help 2HS5, I just contacted the member you tipped me about!
I go the other way-- looking for a European S320 trunk badge to replace "S600". It's more difficult to remove the V12 badges on the fenders, but not as obvious as the trunk badging.
I love sleepers...
