S Class outaccelerates MB Claims

In a recent test from Auto Motor und Sport, S600 accelerated from 0 to 100 kmh (0-62mph) in only 4.5 seconds. Anyone?

Better be under 5seconds for a 120k car with a v12.

Whats the 0-60 on the S55?

MBUSA estimates it at 4.8seconds. However, I think independent tests will bring the number down to around 4.5. I'd personally take the S55 over the S600, even if the S600 is more luxurious. I love the driving feel of the AMG's, much more sporty.

They're bringing over the S600 with twin turbos? How would they go onto passing emissions with that?

Question

AndrewEclipse- How would the S55 feel sportier than the S600? The only thing different between an S55 and S600 sport is the AMG engine which I could see being a little sportier feeling. But the suspension, brakes, etc. are the same.

As for the S55 vs. S600 I would take the S600 because you can chip it and swap turbos just like people do with S4's. I imagine this would give u another atleast 80 hp!

I have to say the only way I would like having a S Class is if it was customized. I see TO MANY old people driving around in em even with sport package!

The suspension is different. The Brakes are different. The seats are contoured AMG sport seats. The exhaust note is much sportier. Its more of a rumble than a refined luxury exhaust note.

As for modding it, Kleeman is releasing a supercharger in January thats going to up the output to 610h.p.!!! With an intercooler, chip, cams, pulley, etc. you would be at around 675h.p.!!!

If you want SUPER FAST refinement -- go with the 600

If you want MAKE YOUR ***** HURT speed and handling -- go with the 55

Chan: There is no reason why it shouldn't meet emission requirements.

Also, MB performance claims are very conservative. Many magazines have tested the C32 AMG as being far faster than what was reported by MB, infact Autocar tested the C32 at 4.6 seconds.

Amgboy,

Dont mention it. Glad to help. Thats why Im sticking with the 55. Dont get me wrong, the 600 is going to be an unbelievable machine, but for a little more sporty edge, the 55 is the way to go.

Too Young To Drive
Does the S600 have like part-time turbos, or do they work full time? Cos if they work full time, imagine how many fuel stops the car will have to make.

2004 S 600
Andrew....

On the S series the only mechanical difference between the S600 and S55 is the engine. Same brakes, same seats, same suspension (ABC), same exhaust, same steering ratios. You can check out the data on the Mercedes Benz worldwide site that now has tech data on both 2003 S models. For 2001-2002 the 55 and 600, only difference was engine and 600 was .2 seconds quicker.....even though MB claimed opposite.....but when car mags tested, they each observed 600 faster.....MB caught some heat from S55 AMG buyers for this.

Oh...there is one difference.....AMG version has 18" wheels rather than 600's 17".

The 600 IMO is clear choice, smooother, much more luxurious interior.

You are wrong. I have said this a couple of times before. The S55 has different seats, brakes from the SL55 AMG, different suspension-setup among other things. The exhaust is not the same.

And both the S55 and S600 have 18in wheels.

the S600 now has the same fotprint as the S55 AMG, 18x8 front and 18x9 in the back.

I wonder what the sport package is going to add in terms of wheel and tire combo, since S55 is supposed to have that standard and yet does not have any more tire than the S600 (the rear tires are slightly downsized in width by about half an inch, although the opposite was expected due to the serious increse in power).

Maybe MB plans to offer a sportier wheel and tire package on both these models, probably 19 inch traditional AMG wheels, on 8.5 fr and 9.5 rear.

I really think the S Class looks much better with the AMG body kit.

2004 S 600
Andrew...Ok, the new 2003 600 must have same size wheels. The last two years 600 came with 17" as stock.

Where do you get your info from about the other differences you claim....would like to read about these. I'm especially interested in hearing how MB modified the ABC suspension system differently for the 55 over the 600 in 2003 as there was no difference before. Thanks.

the spring rate is modified, not necessarily the ABC software itself from one model to the other. On this regard though, the ABC was modified/enhanced for all models for 2003, now it takes into account weight distribution when loaded.
