mine gets about 12-13 city and over 20mpg on the highway. BTW...the 2003 600 series have a 5.5L engine with twin turbos.

The EPA estimates for 2008 are 11/17 for the S600 and 13/20 for the S65.

i've always impressed that the V12s get similar gas mileage to V8's. i
recall that my 93 SL600 used to get about 14mpg, similar to our V8 BMW X5.
currently my 02 NA S55 V8 is getting around 14-15mpg. i am still surprised that it's so much lower than my 01 E55 with same engine which averaged 19mpg.
could 400 lb difference in car weight make that much difference? my gut feel is that even adding 3 people my E55 would still get close to 18mpg.
in conclusion, i guess my question is what other variable(s) could explain this?

The V12 engine is actually has smaller pistons and less compression than the standard v8. I would exect it to be a tad bit efficient for a v12. In fact, I would say that if you removed the turbo, there wouldn't be much left.
I'm actually surprised you expected any better mileage from you S55. The s500 barely hits the 20's on average. You don't think they would make the big mistake of allowing the AMG version of the same car to get better mileage do you?
Between the S and the E are more variables than just weight. There is programming, gear ratios, drag coefficient, and whatever else..I would like to believe you were getting 18 city on an E55 but somehow I just don't. That is barely E500 mileage.
The advertised mileage for the S55 in 2004 is like 14 city and 22 Hwy and 16 city 22 HWY for the S500 so if you are getting 14 you re just about on the mark for that car.

btw, i was getting 19mpg "average" on the E55...not city. this was based on my trip odometer which i did several times after 2k miles. both times averaged about 19mpg.
