shifter stuck in park/brake light switch
Hi All,
I have a 200 S430 and the shifter is stuck in park. The mechanic says that there is a 50% chance that it's the brake light switch. Has anybody else had this problem and do you think it's the brake light switch? Could it be anything else?
Thanks!

The short answer is that it is not your brake switch, but a little plastic piece that is located inside your shifter that is prone to failure.
There are option to get it fixed. I removed mine to prevent any further issues.

I had an SL500 that did that and it was the brake light switch. It's a two position switch, position one is the brake lights and position two is the shift lock. The car was under warrenty and it took the tech about 20 min. to replace it.

If your car is 2003+ , then you should have an emergency release next to shifter- .....small hole - push pen or small screwdriver inside to release shifter.
If not then it can be released by striking a small part of the mechanism beneath the shifter knob (take the cover off), but only if you know what you are doing.
Failing that, then like me its a phone call to breakdown recovery, and your car dragged onboard to the nearest MB dealer.
$700 for new shifter selector
good luck

Repair Solution
I have the plastic part in stock and I can ship worldwide. Log on to www.monoglobal.com.au to view and order the part.
Internal plastic lever is there to prevent children from inadvertedly moving the gearstick lever out of Park. Removing the lever may cause your car to roll away down a hill with your kids inside.
Choose from original plastic or high strength aluminum. Repairs can be done by any reputable MBZ shop in about an hour or two. No need for recoding with Star Diagnosis.

Shifter Stuck in "R"
I HAVE ML350 2003 W163, IT HAS NO BRAKE PEDAL SWITCH (HAS Brake Pressure Sensor), SOMETIMES THE SHIFT LEVER GETS JAMMED IN “R”, THERE ARE NO FAULT LIGHTS FOR ABS, ESP, BAS ETC, I CAN UNLOCK THE JAM WITH A SCREWDRIVER AND THE LEVER CHANGES WORKS WELL.
QUESTION: COULD THE JAMMING IN THE SHIFT LEVER BE CAUSED BY MALFUNCTION OF THE SOLENOID IN THE GEAR SHIFT ASSEMBLY?
GREATLY THANK YOU FOR FEEDBACK. REGARDS
