s500 05 navigation problemHey guys,

Hey guys,

Just picked up my S 500. When I''''m loading navigation DVD it is telling me loading software and that status bar not moving at all. Any ideas?

What version is the DVD? Recent versions require the dealer flash the nav unit. If it's the original DVD (2006 or earlier), you might need to take it to the dealer. Are you on warranty?

2004 W220 (S430), 2001 R129 (SL500 Sport)
I recently got a new nav DVD for my '04 S430. When it wouldn't read I called Navtec (they make the OEM DVD and sell it in a MB case with a MB part number on it for $200 instead of the $385 the dealership quoted). They said the software needed to be flashed. I took it to the dealer (car is still under warranty) and they said it would be $114 to flash the software. I raised the question that since the car is still under warranty I would think software upgrades would be part of the warranty. The service writer wasn't moving off the $114. The shop manager came up and told the service writer to rewrite the ticket from "Owner wants software upgrade" to "Owner says nav won't read." They flashed it under warranty. They never asked or noticed that I didn't buy the DVD from them--or didn't care since it had a MB case and part number.

In fact there's a TSB that says nav dvd upgrades are inoperative. Your SA was poorly informed.

It is original DVD and my car out of warranty, I can hear that it is reading it, but for some reason it is doesn't want to load software. Is it possible to flash unit by myself?

Sounds like hardware, not something that can be flashed. You probably need to take it to a dealer.

No idea. It could even be a bad DVD. But if it's the COMAND, it could be $3,000 or more. But only the dealer can tell you what's the problem.

most likely it is NOT the comand since it received NO GPS signals. The GPS signals are fed directly into the NAV drive via a Splitter located on the right wall of the trunk above the battery. IT could be either the splitter, antenna, or nav drive. My guess would be the antenna first.

Why would that prevent the software from loading?

How do you know its the original DVD? What year is your car? What does the DVD say on the cover?

It's odd that you would even have to load the original dvd.. they are usually already installed.. Hence the question and speculation..

I've only seen this happen on 04-06 cars when someone tries to load a 2008 W221 DVD in their drive.

I am running a DVD I copied from a 2007 E class in my 2004 and it works fine. The flash was on the DVD when I installed it.

You're not giving us the version information. Look on the DVD. It probably has a year (like 2007 or 2008) towards the top of the label. It also has a part number (starting with BQ) and a version indication like "Version 7" or 2006.2. If you just post everything on the label, we can help. I suspect you have a later DVD that requires the reflash, which the dealer should do for free because of the Technical Service Bulletin. But post all the info on the DVD label and we can be sure.

You need the reflash for that DVD to work. Tell the dealer to apply TSB Number P-82-85-264. Title: Navigation System - DVD Not Recognized. They should do it for free.

Are you sure the rear fog is working. You have to pull the light switch all the way out with the lights switched on. You should have a light on in the rear only on the left side. It sounds like something is miswired back there or a bulb is out.

Disk that shipped with the 2007 E-classes for well over a year now.. I have the version with the "nice lady".

You need to look on the DVD. You might have 2006.1, which was the last pre-flash version. 2006.2 was very similar, except it was meant to work with the flashed nav. The flash was really done to make the 2007 and 2008 disks readable and 2006.2 was the interim DVD.

Makes no sense to me. They should have a DVD to do the flash with.

No, I'd let the dealer do it. By I admit, they don't sound very competent.
