For those of you who own 2005-2006 W220s

Can you please tell me, does the top of your Airmatic strut look like this:

Or this?

I am asking because my original strut seals looked like the first picture, but after installing the repair kit it looked like the second image. Now after installing brand new struts, it looks like the first image again. I'm just trying to seek confirmation that my struts are the newest ones from the latest W220 models.

The correct and proper configuration is the first pic.

The second pic is without the compound that is used to keep the brass stem from breaking off.. Somebody did that wrong.

newton they should look like the frist pic and the repair should of looked like the first pic too if done properly. The second pic shows the outdated repair kit I believe that's what the 2000-2002 W220's looked like.

The new seal kit FAILED in my case at dealers FAULT for installing pre-dated equipment in my car as you can see by those pics, so they had given me a new strut at their cost. Did you have to pay for your new struts?

Yessir. $4000 including other miscellaneous suspension parts and labor. A piece of paper now weighs more than my wallet.

That's really odd... I've owned my previous W220 S500 for almost 3 years and the top of my struts looked exactly as the SECOND picture does... no resin filling around the brass connector...

This is the best shot of my old car's engine bay that I could dig up, but if you look closesly at the passenger side you'll see the top of the strut looks like the second picture above...

So I say... what the ****?

Car was purchased as a CPO and serviced at multiple dealerships countless times...

Sorry to chime in on this but I own an '03 S-Class should I have my struts resemble picture #1 or picture #2? My car currently resembles picture #2. I would like to get in front of this issue. Thanks.

Basically, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. However, do check the strut mount for cracks in the concentric circles; the first thing that will show is small cracks in the paint - showing weakness in the metal below. Then, you will see the actual cracks in the metal - and you'll soon have a leak.

I replaced my upper seals in my '00 in '03, after the paint cracked and I could see bare metal; I didn't wait for the metal to crack. The replacement was done with upper seals that look like yours (but had a different circle pattern stamped than the originals in my '00). My '05 mounts have the resin, as in the upper picture.

Dealers may have the older replacement parts in stock; but personally I would want the newest design - the one that seems to have been prone to fewer problems.
