722.6 trans flush and filter pix

here are the pics of the transmission service that i did last weekend.14 litres of MB synthetic fluid, new filter and seals.52k miles on this trans.judge for yourself,it was time to service this trans.i dont understand MB's policy of lifetime fluid/filters.if you have any intention of driving your Benz for a long time than this service is necessary.

I had my S600 fluid changed at my local dealer a few months ago. They used a BG brand fluid machine to exchange all of the fluid including the torque converter. The shift quality isn't any different and sometimes it seems like the tranny is slipping now but I may be imagining it.

the only way the fluid would cause a problem is if they used the fluid spec for the 7spd trans.im assuming you have the 5spd and allthough i did use the MB synthetic,i have been assured that i could have used a standard dexron 3 and it would not have made a difference.the fluid level isnt rocket science but it does have to be accurate, high or low will affect shift quality.how many miles on the trans?

When I did the fluid change on my 210 Eclass with the same tranny, I could only get about 3 or 3.5 quarts out due to no access to the torque converter.

Does the S have a TC drain plug? If not, why so much fluid? does it have a bigger pan or something?

my car has the 5spd and 52K miles just like the S500 in this thread. I have no idea which fluid was used but I can only assume that the tech used the correct spec fluid for the car.

drop the pan and do the filter as before .after reassembly you add initial 5 litres, then start the vehicle and with the trans cooler return line removed from the trans and placed in a catch container you do three cycles of recovering 3 litres and adding 3 litres.at the end i had clear red fluid coming into the catch container and the entire system was flushed.no need to remove the converter drain whether it exists or not.ive used this method on all types of vehicles.this is the star library exact procedure.i can post it if anyone wants to refer to it.

hopefully it is just getting used to new viscosity, valve bodys and clutch packs are fussy.there is no way it was detremental in any way.it will live longer than if you hadent done the service."BUT" you can not forsake the brute force of your powerplant and the effects on everything that is attached to the crankshaft.

Hey Cobra,
Which side is the trans cooler return line? Driver side or passenger?

I really like your method. Initally I was planning on dropping the pan and filter, add 4 quarts (depending on how much came out), drive a bit then siphon out and replace another 4 quarts to dilute the dirty fluid. Your method is much more effective.

Thanks!

Thanks for the posts and the pics, AH1W - nice info, and glad your computer survived the ordeal of attaching the pics.

you cant miss it,it is a banjo bolt that attaches the line to the trans case, there are also to line routing clamps between the radiator/trans cooler.if you remove these it will give the line enough slack to easily route into the catch container/one gallon plastic bottle.

Sclass
i did the samething instead i used the new amsoil atf fluid which is mb approved for pretty much all there transmissions.

a full system flush 14quarts total as well.

fluid, filter and gasket cost me $150 and the tranny flush at friends shop $50.

$200 to me is a hell of alot better then spending $5grand for a tranny
