It's a couple hundred bucks with the metal blade cut. If you order a key now, they only deliver the chrome version. You can only order it at the dealer who will confirm VIN and ownership, and it comes with the metal blade precut for your lock. The first time you use it, it programs itself to your rolling code with a write-once command.

You should have the service department code the new key as a replacement for the missing one. If you don't the EIS will treat it as an additional (third) key. The difference is that two keys have their own memory settings. That way, using key-dependent memory, two people can have different default (M1) settings for seat and mirror triggered only by the key they use. Of course, each can program their own different memory settings as well. It works very well. But a third key doesn't have any memory slots in the EIS.

Yes, you can. I did that with my 03 S430, I now have two keys w/ the new style chrome wrap.

It cost $180 each. Try Mercedes of South Bay.

If you have Keyless Go, the chrome keys are NOT available. You will get one of the old black keys.

Are you 100% sure about this ?? because I have seen a thread on E55(W211). the black Smartkey is no longer avalible, you have to buy the newer one even you want the older black one ??

Well, I haven't tried it personally, but everyone on a different board that has tried, gets the old black key. Best bet is to ask the parts guy at your dealer what you'll get.

I decided not to try and get the newer one since I have Keyless Go - I never see the key except when I'm putting it in my pocket.

Post if you find otherwise - it's good information for the board.

They may be able to order you one if you do not want Keyless Go functionality. Ask the dealer - that is your only option here.

If you have the older style of keyless go (2004 or older) you can get the new chrome key, it'll work like your black one since your keyless go is a card-key.

2005 or newer cars (with keyless go) the key itself act as a keyless go and standard key so you cannot get chrome key. You can infact get the chrome key for 2005+ car but it'll work in ignition only and keyless go function will not work with chrome key.

Does anybody know, why this is the case? How does Keyless GO in the W221 work?

Grateful for any info.

To further confuse everyone... My sister just bought a 2005 CLK500 with Keyless Go and it has a chrome key that works.

I checked with my parts guy again and he said you can get chrome for every model with Keyless Go EXCEPT S and SL. He does not know why.

Forgive my ignorance as I'm a new MB owner, but is the only advantage to having the '07 and up smart key the "chrome covers" on both sides.....or are there different functions as well?

The chrome key is said to have a better range, besides that it does look better (in some persons view)

On the down side, it is larger and heavier.

I think the extra heft makes it feel more substantial - like a Mercedes part should.
