yes we've gotten to that point in PHX, AZ that we need the heated seats, however I don't see how you turn them on? There are dials on the seats to control temp. level but I've not seen an acutal button to activate either passenger or drivers side

heated/ac buttons are on the door not the seats. you would see the small button with 2 red lights and 3 blue ones. right near the seat memory button.

If there are no buttons on your doors near the seat adjustment switches, then you don't have heated seats. I thought it was standard on all W220's but apparently its listed as option 873 under accesories according to NetStar.
Hmm something new every day.

Uh, the dials on the inboard seat foundation aren't to control the temperature of the seat heaters. Those controls are for the stiffness of the lumbar bladder in the seat back--or that and the massage function if you have "active" seats. If you just have a thumbwheel with 1-5 on it, that's the lumbar stiffness. The seat heaters have a "hi" and "lo" setting depending on which one of two buttons you push on the door controls. If you don't have those two buttons (they may be in a different place on the '01--I have an '04), then I reckon you don't have heaters. All this is pretty well explained in the owner's manual.

W220 S430s had heated seats optional, they were standard on S500 or greater. gac, is right they weren't ordered for cars destined for warmer climates, although I think you can use them everywhere. I use mine all the time even in some warmer months its nice on low.

The button would look like this if you had them:

That all changed after the facelift...

Also I live in Texas and have NEVER seen an S with heated seats.. Although I agree that the older models listed it as optional on the 430.

Correct cars from Florida don't have them either. My buddy has an 01 and no heated in his 500 mine originally came from Boston so its 49 out now. I know nothing compared to what some of you are experiencing but chilly to us here. I'm using mine today

since we're on this topic I have to say the seats take sooo long to get warmed up, but once they are warm it's the best heated seats you will EVER sit on, everyone says that. It warms the whole seat not just the bottom or the lower back

I wish I had ventilated seats my back gets pretty sweaty in the summer time LOL

My 04 S430 doesnt have heated seats and I wish it did.
Should be standard in all W220 models but not the case.
I had them in my entry level C240 - go figure
