I think it's called navtec, or navitec, something like that. They sell the updated DVD's much cheaper than your local dealer.

I bought an '08 DVD for my '04 S430 from Navtec. It came in a Mercedes OEM sleeve with a Mercedes part number. It was less than $200 and the dealer was quoting close to $350 if memory serves. Google "navtec" and you can find their website.

A warning: My Comand software had to be updated for the new CD. The dealer wanted $140 to update it because I said "the Comand software needs updating." A tech came by and said to the service writer "put 'owner says navigation DVD will not read correctly' on the work order." At that point it became a warranty upgrade. Your car is out of warranty, so you may face the cost of the software upgrade--I would argue you shouldn't, but you are probably wasting your breath. Find out if the upgrade is included in the dealer price for the DVD. Do the math: it's a wash if the upgrade is included. If the upgrade is not included in the dealer DVD price, buy the DVD from Navtec and pay the dealer to flash the software. My dealer never noticed or asked if I got the DVD from him because it was in a MB sleeve.

First the 03 have the CD based navigation system. What this means is that if you buy the entire package it comes with 10 disc which include Canada. Depending on the location where you drive the most you might just want to buy a disc for that general location. Quite often the individual disc are sold on ebay. I'm not sure if the ML and S use the same type of disc in MY 03. Someone else will have to answer that question. I believe the latest update is 07. Here is the website for navteq who makes the disc http://navteq.com/

ibeforreal is correct that the '03 used CDs, not DVDs.

The latest nav CD set for the "D" nav system used in S-Classes manufactured after October 1999, through the '03 model year, is dated 01/07 (January 2007), MB part # BQ 6 46 0222. It is no longer listed as available on the NavTeq site; the sources would be your dealership (about $275 for a full set - the only way they're sold by dealers). Individual discs would be available only on ebay or a private individual who is willing to break a set.

LoS, you might benefit by taking a look at https://mbworld.org/forums/suggestio...-guy-help.html as well.

I wondered if the DVD nav was a running upgrade in the '03 or a model year changeover. When LoS said he had a DVD system, I assumed he had actually opened the nav in the trunk and looked at what was there. Thanks for the correction on NavTeq.

The roads haven't change enough in my area to justify buying it for that reason, but I like the local "points of interest" (POI) feature on the system but notice it is a little out of date. I don't suppose the NAVTEQ folks publish a list of updates / upgrades each year, do they? It would be interesting to see what they've added before paying for an upgraded disc and installation of it.

Your best bet for POI updates is a portable GPS that can be updated on the internet. That way you are buying a data flash, not a whole new DVD. I have a Garmin for my wife's Lexus (no factory nav), and it's a simple matter to keep it upgraded, and a LOT less expensive than a new DVD (even from NavTeq).
