removing rear discs on my 2002 S500

The other day I had a reply back on how to remove the rear pads. Turned out that it was only 1 pin to remove on my brakes against what was being suggested i.e. 2 pins. Now that I managed to do that I now want to have a go at the rear discs. Would I be correct in saying that it is the 2 18mm bolts at the back of the caliper that need to be removed to take the caliper off?

There are two pins BTW but that only removes the caliper from the support so you can change the pads.

If you are taking of the rotor, you need to remove the caliper from the support then remove the support via the two bolts.

It is much harder to remove the support if the caliper is still attached.

Remember. Its the suppot that overlaps the rotor not the caliper itself.

That's my fault. 2 pins in the front, 1 in the back. Yes you are correct, once you remove the bolts, all you need is a large phillip screw driver to remove disc retaining screw, and you can pry the disc off. Be sure emergency brakes are off.

Yes there are two bolts top & bottom that need to come off in order for the caliper to be removed. If you need more help pm me!

The parking break works by contacting a small brake shoe inside the drum that's part of the rear rotor. People forget to release their parking brake and can't figure out why the rotor won't budge.

also dont forget to decompress the caliper a little bit to take it off the rotor,

theres also a common case where the rotor might be alittle hard to take off due to a little rust build up arounf the center hub

my technic is to spray WD-40 around the hub and then with a hammer hit it around the rotor (not the disc part because if your not changing your rotrs can damage it if your just replace pads) and the vibrations should cause it to wiggle and come off

The only thing holding the rotor on is the small screw. After that is removed just knock it off. Heat and wear can cause the rotor to stick. I hate to say it but "CAREFULLY" use a sledge hammer, and turn the disc while you hit. (CAREFULLY) Its not going to slide off easy.
