It is located underneath the engine bay. If I recall it is accessed from below on the drivers' half of the engine bay and up about half an arm from laying underneath. I have the dealer repair manual on CD at work and I can print out the page to scan to you which shows exactly where it is. I changed it out in about 5 minutes when I did it last year. No problem.

If you don't have a subscription to ALLDATAdiy.com for your Mercedes I would highly recommend it. I attached an image of the Crankshaft Position Sensor. ALLDATAdiy.com's replacement procedure shows you will only need to remove the air cleaner on the engine side to access the Crank Sensor on your S430. Do yourself a favor and get a subscription. It will be the best $27 you will spend on your car!

I was having the same symptoms as you, stalling or when warmed up wouldn't start for an hour. I changed the cps out a few hours ago. Worked!!
I changed it from the top, I took the intake/engine cover off and reached behind the cylinders from the drivers side. It's a tight fit but I had it done in 10 mins. Your going to need a 1/4inch drive E8 socket to do the fix
