Check your transmission mount!
Hello all... I was looking under my car during some routine maintenance today, and noticed that the transmission mount looked a bit scruffy and ever so slightly warped. I took it to a good indy here in San Diego (Southbay Autohaus, top notch and cheap), who replaced it for $80 out the door.
HOLY SMOKES!!!
I didn't realize what I have been missing. The car is so damn smooth on acceleration / revving that it's unbelievable.
With 77K on this '01 that is in pristine condition with all stealer records, I didn't expect such a great improvement in NVH to come from a $40 part. I cannot reccomend enough for all of you new owners to have it checked; my indy told me 75% of 'em out there are bad in some way, and it's a dirt cheap way to make your car crystal smooth on start, accel and cruise. Check it out!

i replaced so many of these in the past.. If you look at the rear mount for the transmission, there is a rubber insert with open spaces above and below the rubber section. If the middle rubber section is collapsed and touching the bottom of the mount or even shows evidence of touching at times, I would replace it. Alot of people out there don't realize how much it effects the feel inside the vehicle.

It's DIY, but only if you can lift your car high enough to get sockets in there, and then provide a separate lift for the transmission weight. If not, pay the $30-$40 in labor and have it done. It's worth it, trust me. LIke I said, my indy advised me that 75% OF W220s out there need a transmission mount- just not bad enough to clunk. It actually affects your engine NVH- before, when I revved it, especially cold, I got a bit of "growwwwwwl", not much, between 1500 and 2000 RPM, and a bit of the same on start and acceleration. Not bad, actually kind of cool sounding. New mount- like I said- holy smokes. Dead silence.

I switched my engine and transmission mounts too. Mine was easier to see that it was bad...I was driving, accelerated, and clunk..car stopped. The bad mounts and vibration caused the power brake hose to snap, so my brakes were gone and the car just shook. New mounts for the engine and transmission, and power brake hose, and it's like new again.
Definitely have a look at it, and the flex disks too in the driveshaft - they are important and can go bad with damaging effects.
