Car wash triggered SRS light?
Hi,
My SRS light came on with the 'Restraint System Malfunction' message on the dashboard as soon as I entered a touchless (Shell) car wash.
Came home, turned the engine off. Then half an hour later, I took the car for a spin, and this time everything was fine. No warning light, no message.
Is this supposed to happen every time you get such a car in an automatic car wash? Will this SRS light come back again?
I got my 2003 S-500 only last week, so I am still not very familiar with all this.
Thanks.

these cars do not like automatic high pressure washes.
You got lucky this time but next time it can cause thousands in damage. There are many reports here, with pics, of the thousands in damage caused by car washes or even rainstorms
Take it to a hand wash or wash yourself.

Not true at all. there are multiple airbag sensors in the exterior of the car, and if they get wet they can become damaged.
High pressure washes are notorious for this, search prior threads.
The problem with water entering the interior is a separate problem and is also exacerbated by high pressure washes

The wheel sensors, airbag sensors and crank sensors are all susceptible to water damage and high pressure washes are the easiest way to cause problems. They are NOT located in the cockpit or caused by water entering the cockpit/reed valve issue. So next time search yourself so you dont look so ignorant

My car had the SRS light on again a couple of weeks ago when it was a hot day. But it went away the same evening.

SRS = supplemental restraint system. Most common failure has to do with a bad occupant sensor under a seat; often, this is caused by is a dirty (hopefully, not wet) connector for the sensor. You guys should be taking a look at the W220 S-Class Owners Start Here sticky, it's covered!

1) As I recall, it's only the passenger and driver's seat.
2) No, you can pay a dealer or independent to do it.
3) We can only tell you where to look, and what a cause might be; we have no long-dstance diagnostic tools to connect to your car. That's why they have dealers and certified independents. Yes, you'll have to address the problem yourself.
4) If it turn out to be water leaking, check the W220 S-Class Owners Start Here sticky at the top of the W220 forum for important information on this problem.
