Rough idle in drive?

Lately i have noticed a rougher idle when the car is put in drive or reverse, and idled. Park is smooth. It seems a bit worse now that the temperature outside recently dropped below 50.

Any idea? In the last 40k miles, i have changed: spark plugs, tps sensor, engine and motor mounts.

Could it be the maf, or maybe power steering pump? Or what?

Is it easy to check? I had the transmission mounts changed about 40k miles ago, would they already be going bad? I drive often and sometimes hard.

Also, at higher speeds sometimes i hear a grinding metal on metal sound coming from the front somewhere, but on full throttle really high speeds. Can it be the transmission mounts? Shifts are fine, no other symptons aside from the rough idle in drive/reverse.

I just did a bit more research, and is it possible it's my a/c compressor? During the summer it would rough idle, and when I turned off the climate control, the engine would be normal. Now it's always rough, but maybe because the temperature is lower and below 50 now. Can that have something to do with it?

OK, I took it in to get looked at - and the engine mounts are bad. That's why I am getting so much vibration. I am getting them changed now, that should clear it up - I'll update when I get the car back.

I just changed my transmission/motor mounts 33,000 miles ago back in December...sucks that I have to do it again!

Re: Engine Mounts

I think I have the same issue with mounts- vibration.

How much should I expect to pay?

To change the 2 mounts for the engine, I got quoted a bit less than $900 for parts and labor. (Independent and not Mercedes)

$900??

http://www.autohausaz.com/search/pro...ber=2202400617

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w220...ement-diy.html

3 hours of labor DIY, The shop can probably do this in 2.

$150 for both parts+ 2 hrs labor(100)=350$

Where is the other 550 going too?

Yeah, I think the parts prices were a little more and they quote around 6 hours to do all 3 mounts.

I got the car back, they changed the 2 motor and 1 transmission mount, as well as fixed an AC compressor bracket that was broken.

The noise and vibration are all completely gone, the car runs 100% quiet and smooth like it used to. That solved it!

The last motor/transmission mounts were done at 85k and at 117k miles, and now 150k. So they seem to come around every 30k or so.

What are the symptoms? Can you describe the noise and vibration?

I'm on 93k Miles now and don't think I've ever touched those.

Also what shop do you go to Rondo? I'm curious

The symptoms were a lot of vibration when the car was in idle, but only when reverse or drive were engaged. Also, if you opened the hood, and stepped on the brake while accelerating a bit, you could see the engine go up a lot, which isn't normal as it should not move that high.

When I rev the car in park from 600 to 4k sharply, it feels as though the car will flip on its side because I feel the motor jump to the right side lol. I do have a slight vibration but I attribute it to spark plugs.

So now that it is getting colder, I noticed another strange thing: (Remember, I just changed the engine/transmission mounts this month)

When I startup the car, and it's cold, the car vibrates a good bit for 20 seconds or so, until the revs die down. The revs and louder whining is normal, but I don't remember the car vibrating so much at startup. Is this normal? Is it possible the motor mounts were installed a little bit incorrectly? Or can this be another issue?

Or maybe the mounts are cold, and since they are new, maybe aren't warmed up enough yet. Who knows!

mounts don't "warm up"

The louder whining could be the secondary air injection for emissions.

The whining noise will be the air pump running but your vibration could be a HT lead fault.. Check all you leads are still flexable...
