2002 Mercedes S500 (w220)
is 5w40 oil ok for 2002 s500 w220
Ok.. so I know there is a lot of threads about this and I know a ton of people state to use 0w-40 for all w220's unless Diesel but is it ok to run this oil. Went to an indie shop and they pushed me into putting this into my Benz... Pretty worried any insight would be appreciated... This is the stuff he put in http://www.mobiloil.com/usa-english/...uck_5w-40.aspx --- this is on the recommended list that he pulled up and meets all required criteria but because it says Diesel on it this is what has been worrying me.... Should I dump the sh-t and just re-do the oil change myself with 0w-40 or am I ok?

Did you say he tried to put diesel oil in a gas engine?!?!?!
The type of oil you use depends on where you live, but I believe 0W-40 is the recommended oil for the S-Class for the whole US, if I am not mistaken. I wouldn't diesel oil at all. You paid him to put the oil you want in, not what he wants. I'd take my business elsewhere if I were you.

Mobil 1 5w-40 Turbo diesel is approved as per MB sheet 229.3
Once approved Mobil 1 5w-40 ESP is no longer approved by MB

thats what I thought as well, its 229.5, I'm looking further into this several places i've called though say the 5w-40 turbo diesel is fine, claiming that the only difference is just for marketing schemes. But according to the Mercedes service booklet either 229.3 or 229.5 is fine....

Mobil 1 5w-50 Formula M is approved for gasoline engines as per sheet 229.3 and 229.5. This oil only available in bulk to the dealers in the Usa as per my research 4 months ago.
