Motor Oil Debate
I typically use Mobil 1 where a lot of other people swear by Royal Purple.
Any thoughts please?
Alex
That said, royal purple is not an oil I would ever use. It shears ridiculously fast.
I use mobil one 5w-40 diesel oil in my car.

The mobil 1 products that meet these needs can be found here...which includes the turbo diesel 5w-40:

For the 05+, they claim you need 229.5, which is below:

Nah, 0w-40 should be fine, since the M113 doesn't really stress the oil too badly. if you are really concerned, you could always go to the hard to find 5w-50 or any of the other 50w oils on the list.

Not trying to challenge you....I am genuinely interested in oil performance and information.
If you mean about oil in general, I have a lot of faith in synthetic oils. With a 5k mile oil change interval, just about any synthetic oil should be fine. I've seen enough used oil analyses to form the opinion that most if not all synthetic oils offer enough protection for these engines.
About royal purple, that also goes back to used oil analyses. Royal purple, while probably fine as noted above, have been known to shear quickly and suffer more from fuel dilution than other brands.

I wasn't so sure about your comment until I searched the web for more details and found you were right; especially in comparison to Amsoil.
It seems many full synthetic oils have polyolefin in them to prevent wear and losing viscosity at high temps (shearing), still giving enough protection.
But like anything, there is better and best.
It's great to hear you have seen alot of used oil analyses and for sharing the information....
