LED plate light DYI

OK so I bought these new lights because my old ones keep burning out and the clear housing was cracked from age and from constantly taking them apart to replace bulbs, plus it was dirty and it doesnt come clean with anything. Anyway lets get to it, In order to remove the old ones you must take the trunk apart which takes about 45-hour depending on if you know what your doing. took me a little over 45 mins.

1- Open trunk lid remove the screws around the handle or button (depending if you a auto trunk closer) with a T15 screw driver.
2- Pull the trunk lining down and completely off as it attached with clips, you must also disconnect the emergency button which is released by a simple clip.
3- The are 6 screw that are 10mm that hold the area the plate attaches to the trunk. they are located around the pump by the lock
4- Remove your plate to reveal two more 10mm screws that are on the outside.
5- Use a plastic wedge to pry the part away from the car (one that holds the plate) start at the top as there is 4 clips at the top around the chrome trim area, this should allow the piece to come free.
6- Remove the old lights the squeezing both sides (from the inside around the pump) and pushing them down threw the opening, once out disconnecting the plug that supplies power.
7-Plug new lights in and test.

To finish reassemble in reverse order and enjoy the bright new lights.

First picture is the back side of the area that holds the plate notice the 6 screw locations (alone the outside border), those are the screws you need to remove, also along the top notice the clips.
Second pic is the screws you need to remove around the plate on the outside
Third pic is the old light vs the new one
Forth pic is the lights on testing if they work, notice how bright they are in bright light
Last is the finished product

opposite-lock...
great write up - thanks for sharing

but

I've got to ask

why...

...WHY would you want your plate MORE VISIBLE???

???

!!!

8-)

OK, maybe I'm weird (uh, scratch that - I'm weird)... but the less visible / memorable my plate is THE BETTER!

just sayin'

I will however use your writeup to spray a light film of black paint inside my lenses.

Or maybe I'll just sharpy over them as I did my //S8 ones... alot easier and nearly as effective.

I like the lights that come on newer Lexus cars plate lights are white not dull yellow, you dont need to take the lights out to color the lens, just unscrew the two screws on either end of the lens and they come out. to change the whole part then yes you need to take it out, this mod you need to take the whole thing out and replace.

I have replaced all yellowish festoon and T10/W5W bulbs in my car for white LED lamps. It is another car (fresh air). Something more like those of today. I got the same LED plate lights almost a year ago. A MB workshop installed them and I saw how they did it, just like '02S430' has explained. Preferred to pay 20 EUR and save lots of headaches.

If a bulb fails, will you need to complete this same job again, or do the lens covers come off with the screws like the OEM version?

yeah job again, i thought about it but this car has been pristine so i just went with the bulbs.. also i didnt want to make it TOO bright so a little aging on the lens covers helps (i think u can buy new lens covers?) i went with 6 led 5050s on both festoons, very cheap if they start to flicker, buy new ones.

Yes as classys said you must do the whole job over to replace them, for me I don't mind I like using my hands but for others it might be a pain

I´m driving with these LEDs on for more than one year and everything works as the first day. In my case I bought this pair of LED modules because until then I think I had tried all kind of festoon and load resistors. Finish tired of having to change them often. Besides, these will not be removed by unscrewing (can not be stolen, sure) and they do not get dirty because they do not come any dirt from outside as the original ones, so this LED light always looks bright. From my experience in LEDs, I think this is a good option. It may not be the best but not bad either. Your choice.
