stick missing from oil dipstick
Purchased a 2003 S500 and am getting around to fixing many things. Went to check the oil yesterday and discovered no stick on the dipstick. Worried where the stick may have gone? All that was present was a plunger to seal the dipstick opening.
Could the stick have dropped partially in the oil pan?

When I bought my '03 S430, the top of the dipstick was broken off. I just bought a replacement.
I would suggest that you buy a replacement and try to insert it - if it goes in OK, don't worry about it.

I thought these cars didn't come with dipsticks, and that the oil was checked via the dash by oil level sensor. At least I know the S600's were this way.

I, too, was amazed that my newly acquired S55 didn't come with a dipstick. But I found a fabulous - and perfect - dipstick at the local wrecking yard. This post has the details...

My 2003 S430 came with a dipstick from the factory. However my friends E500 doesn't have a dipstick. I checked the oil on a 2004 S500 and it had a dipstick.

Most of the non 4Matic versions have the dipstick, however the v12s and the 4matics or kompressor series never has a dipstick. I'm not sure what Mercedes is doing here, since the onboard computer isn't very accurate.

My dipstick came with the car from the factory. I don't know how they pick and choose which cars to include the dipstick.

To get the computer to show oil level, you need to turn the key to the first position (only SRS light should be on) Use the steering wheel buttons and navigate to the TOTAL ODO and TRIP ODO page. Press the "R" button 3 times and you should see a voltage pop up. Use the up and down buttons to scroll through the displays until you hit a page with your VIN number. Turn the key to the second position. LIGHT CHECK MODE. Wait a few seconds and the OIL LEVEL should show a number.
BTW i don't trust that oil meter at all. My dipstick says max, the computer says 6.9 Qts. My car takes 8.5 Qts. Theres no way im 1.6 Qts off. Been driving the car since and no problems.
