Star Diagnostic System Question
I'm trying to piece together the Star Diagnostic System that I need for my S600. I've tried to search the forum but cannot get my questions answer so hopefully someone can help me. It's some simple questions at the end.
So far what I've gathered is that I need:
1. SD Connect Multiplexer/Scan tool like this:
2. Laptop with RS232/Serial port such as DELL D630.
3. Multiplexer cables such as 16pin OBD II cable and RS232 to RS485 Cable
4. Star Diagnosis software preferably with the latest version.
Would that be all I need for my 01 S600?
Should it be only a C3 multiplexer?
What about the cables? Are those two cables sufficient?
I don't understand the 'hard drive' that some companies ship with. Are those hard drives shipped with the Operating system+SDS software installed? If so, why can't I obtain the software and install it myself on the D630 laptop?
Would appreciate if someone can answer these questions. Thanks in advance.

You can do better with a wired C3/C4 multiplexer
What about the cables? Are those two cables sufficient?
The multiplexer is usually sold together with a cable set

You can buy a set of 14 DVDs with the complete software (cheap) on fleabay. Your D630 must be modified with a 129g HD and 4g RAM.
Would appreciate if someone can answer these questions. Thanks in advance.

Yeah I'd prefer wired but I think the one in the picture is both wired and wireless?
Yeah I saw that but I was just trying to get what I need just for my S600 without getting all those extra cables. But if the price isn't much different, then I'll get all.
I'm not sure I understand the part about "129G HD"? What do you mean? You mean a 120GB HD and 4GB Ram?
Thanks.

Instead of trying to piece it together to save a few bucks it's much better to buy a whole package that is up and running and includes the computer with the software on it already so it's working from the start
Numerous people have never got it to install it work correctly , or have spent 10-30 hours tryjng to make it all work . Unless uou value your time at less than $20/hour it's better to buy the complete working package

2--With a C4 mux you don't need a serial port-it runs on the Ethernet connection.
3--When you purchase a mux all the cables come with the mux
Regarding the C3 mux, that mux is no longer supported passed DAS Xentry version 09_2015--plus you can do much more with the C4 mux.
Regarding the hard drive---for nubies the hard drive is much easier as the install of DAS Xentry is not for the light of heart, plus they also bundle WIS and EPC with the hard drive---to start to learn the system that may be the best option.

Newbie
Plenty to absorb here for a newbie owner.
I'm checking options now.
A thread on SBC recommended MB Star C3 w/Top Ver software. But that was a few years ago.
I assume updates on this must be able to do all it did i.e. SBC.
SO I'm going for a SD C4 unit packaged with Dell E6410 and all software V2016 installed for USD$990 plus postage to Australia
After I buy this and the SBC if genuinely required it will cost same as at local replacement at workshop.
My bonus is the SD C4 Unit, and the old SBC pump which I intend to overhaul myself for my other E240 W211 when it reaches similar kms.
I'm still not sold on error C2359 being due to faulty SBC. Being a retired fitter and turner *** ship building engineer, with plenty of time and a great man cave, I intend to crack this nut wide open.
ALL Mercedes repair shops in Australia are rip off merchants, wont even accept parts from accredited Mercedes OEM. They charge AUD$3200 for a SBC unit plus AUD$400 to replace.
I intend to offer alternatives to retired not so well off Mercedes owners. Beautiful cars and very safe, 2nd hand prices are good now, better than Holden or Ford. Its just the repair bills scaring ppl off.
Id like to thank all members who contributed here and elsewhere. I'll keep you posted.
