02 vs 05 s600 brake calipers

I'm seeing them listed as being different, but can't find what the actual difference is?

On European cars, 4 pot calipers and 345mm discs were fitted up to 2002. 8 pot calipers and 360 discs were fitted thereafter (same as S55 kompresser).

On US, Japan and Australian cars, I believe the 4 x 345 brake were fitted to all models.

I'm seeing some sites listing compatibility as 03-06, and 00-02, then I'm seeing others list 00-06... I would have thought they'd be the same. Not so sure now

I just went thru this with the S430.

The early S430 cars have dual-piston calipers and vented disks on the rear. At the end of the 2002 model year, the rear brakes changed to single-piston sliding calipers and smaller solid disks.

But - either brake set-up will fit on the rear of any W220 or S500, if you change the entire set on both sides. This sorta makes the puzzling application listings make sense.

I suspect the S600 set-up is similar - as long as you use the complete set, either will probably fit any W220 S600.

Ok, thank you. I just wanted to make sure the 02's wouldnt be a downgrade of any kind, or cause any fitment issues.

I appreciate the reply.

Im assuming then the brake pads would work across all years as well? Those are having the same conflicting compatibility in the listings.

I didn't think to compare the brake pads when I switched the brakes - but I suspect that you will need the pads that match the calipers.

Looks like brake pads are the same on the fronts from 00-06. On the rears they are different (smaller) on 00-02 models than on 03-06 models.

Perhaps the S600 is different - but on the S430/S500, the earlier brakes have bigger disks and calipers.

That would make sense they're bigger since they strapped on two turbos in 03.

Mine is an 05.

Looking at picking up a crashed 02 for parts. Which is why I was asking about compatibility

Mercedes
Yes it is opposite

S600 got better brakes in later years , while the s430/s500 got inferior brakes in later years

I was starting to wonder if you both were posting on the Girly TT handle, lol. It'll be much less confusing since you both have accounts.

Nope, it was only me posting.

I told him he needed to join so he could document the build and repairs.

Turns out... Like every accessory is broken.

I feel like this is turning into our Ram v10 project all over again. Haha

I have a hard time feeling sorry for you after you told me what you paid for it, lol. I think you'll still be way better off than what I bought mine for after you get everything fixed, though.

If it's anything like our Ram was, we'd have been better off paying full retail on an S65 haha

I hear ya. Like my dad's Harley he bought @ Copart. By the time he had it together he literally could have bought a new one for about the same money, lol. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you just learn a lot.
