The dealerships that do not require a recall letter, or who do not put up a smokescreen of "checking VINs" are up on their communications with Mercedes, and are aware of the warranty extension.

Those that require a recall letter or "check the VIN" are simply not doing their elementary homework, and need a kick in the shins.

I know this is an old thread, but I hope someone can help me.

Anybody have the schematics for the circuit board with the BUZ102S transistors on?
It is a Bosch board with product number 1038319021-10.

Seems to me that two of the BUZ102s are working in parallel. In between them and the large Siemens capacitor there is a component that is so badly burned that I cannot visually identify it. The location mentioned is where it is in the circuitry, physically it is located on the under side of the board, just below the large capacitor.

Considering where it is in the circuitry, this probably is a resistor, but does anybody know for sure? And if so, do you know what value to replace it with?

the dealership will replace your cluster for FREE.

why spend $15, none the less $1200 to fix it when the dealership will due to a recall? Regardless of if you got a letter or not, all ICs have an extended 10 year warranty on them...

 

I had the same thought, but perhaps Tangis' car falls outside the extended warranty VIN range...

 

So did mine, but the recall is extended to all W220s if said I/C is failing. There was a 10 year warranty placed on the clusters. Only reason I can think of is if hes not in the USA

 

Has anyone out there had this done under "warranty" withOUT having some portion of the IC fail? In other words, can it be done as preventative if an owner is up against the 10 year extended next year and nothing has gone wrong yet?

 

Yes it can, and in my opinion should be done preventively. Mine would go out and come back on after a couple restarts, and when I took it in for replacement it was working fine. My SA even encouraged me to have it replaced regardless, since it is a safety issue and there is no cost. Definitely do not let the ten year extended warranty run out w/out replacing the IC!

Thanks, but I call it common sense not lying. IMO, MB should have issued a formal Recall. What happens to those who's ICs go out after the extended warranty? They are screwed, and will have no choice but to shell out $1,500 to replace on their own dime. They may also be dead if the IC goes out on a busy highway after dark. I can tell you first hand that you can see absolutely nothing when it does. I even started keeping a flashlight close at hand just in case. This really is a serious safety issue, and I wouldn't be surprised if hundreds or thousands go out after the ten year warranty.

 

Yes.. took my car in for some repair work a few months back and they replaced the cluster under the recall.

The tech who did the recall was obviously not experienced as he broke the stalk of the brightness adjustment knob and also a few clips for the frame of the cluster were snapped off.

 

Having my 2002 cluster replaced under warranty as I am typing this..........

 

Just to clarify some things: The cluster recall (which applied to certain VINs) applied to clusters with any of three specific possible defects, all of which showed up as a loss of lighting. The extended warranty applied to ALL U.S. W220s for 10 years from initial service date (which is later than the date of manufacture) - and was for ANY defect.

Have your dealer read the language of the documents. The extended warranty applies to any defect because it did not specify conditions under which it applied, or any limitations except the duration of the warranty - so it applies to any and all defects as a matter of law.

 

Any idea if the recall includes other models? I have a CLK with the same problem.

 

As stated earlier in this string and in others concerning the cluster recall and the subsequent extended warranty, the W220 S-Class and the W215 CL are covered.

 

10 yr unlimited mileage warranty? im asking because mine is an 03 and its start to flicker on and off

Ok so my situation is that my 2000 Mercedes Benz S430's cluster just failed. Since the warranty is extended 10 years and the cluster was recalled before, will the cluster still be fixed as of today for free? Vehicle was bought in 1999 and I am a second owner of the car. IS the warranty extended 10 years from previous service date? Can my cluster still be fixed for free under the warranty and recall?

 

If I buy a used IC on Internet/Ebay:
1/ Do I have to match the exact part No?( mine is A220 540 1151). I see on Ebay with description of S430 IC 2000-2006 with different only of last 4 digits. Is this OK?
(I have S430 year 2000)
2/ If Ok, then after installed it, do I need to have it reprogrammed by the dealer?

Used clusters can not be reprogrammed with the correct mileage. Do not buy a used cluster on eBay.

 

The previous owner bought the IC from Ebay and it ran for 4 years.
He just id not remember whether he had matched the part number nor the dealer reprogramming (most of times he had he car maintained by outside shops).

I have the unit apart but the temp, fuel and tach needles are in the way to get to the 2nd circuit board that holds the power supply transformer. How do they come off??
I've seen what seems to be the same question but there was no detail on how to get to the transformer solder points

Do the needles simply pop off (the speedometer needle does)
They seem very stuck and I am afraid to pry on them to hard.
